We keep or house pretty darn fool in winter (67-68 daytime, 65 at night) and the converse in summer to save money and be more acclimated when working outside. Even at that, last month's gas bill was $95, and it's been far colder for longer spells for the next billing period!!! |
I can only dream of a $95 gas bill from Nov-March. Mine usually averages $200-$225 month. We keep the thermostats at 68 winter and 80 summer. Living in an old house that my granddaddy built when my 85 year old mother was a baby doesn't help. |

Must be a pretty good sized house too, ours is only 1,760 ft/2. A bunch more insulation in our attic would help, but the $1,000 always seems to go somewhere else, mostly bills and living. _________________ Dave

Our house comes in around 2100 ft. We've done some work, but more is needed. He built the house from wood he salvaged when the livery stable was torn down in the little town of Sherwood, a mile to our south. I've been told the livery stable was built in the 1880's. The old yellow pine is still sappy.
He also built a house for his sister 200 yards to our north. When my cousin went through re-doing the house after her passing, they found the old original wood plank walls were constructed of used dynamite crates...still with logos and warnings. |

Man, that's even more of a landmark than the house on Granada where I was born!
All kidding aside, old stuff there. They can be a PITA at times when it comes to maintenance, but you have to marvel at ingenuity and making use of what's available. My wife's parents still live in the house where her dad was born and raised, and It's well over 100 years old. The floors sag and pitch and the whole structure sits on house jacks to adjust for sinking into the Cache River loam! _________________ Dave
