Was down for the holidays and managed to get me and my boys out on 12/27 and 12/28. 12/27 was cold, we only went out for a couple of hours after lunch to a nearby spot, and caught lots of fish (reds, drum, and a sheepshead) but all were too small to keep. My son with his sheepshead pictured below right before he released it:
Sat. 12/28 was nicer, we got out before lunch and went all the way across Aransas bay near the entrance to the Lydia Ann channel, since there are plenty of deep drop-offs next to some flats areas there. After spending hours plying those waters, all we had to show for it were 2 small trout (one was technically slightly over 15", but since I'm convinced that all game wardens have tape measures that are 1/2" longer than mine, we released him). We then returned to the spot close to hom from the day before and started catching fish again, albeit small ones. After catching the above mentioned trout, then small reds and finally a 13" flounder, we realized we had achieved a "mini" Texas Slam. Needless to say, my boys were more thrilled about this than I was, but it was still fun. We finally hooked into a few keeper redfish a short while before leaving, one was 20.5" (which we kept) and one was more upper slot size. The bigger one had other plans, though, as after my son reeled him in next to the boat, it spit out the hook and waved goodbye to us with his tail fin. Such is fishing. At least when you're fishing in the surroundings pictured below, you know life is good. Till next time...
