X2 on the needing probable cause, and don't think the licence plate light is enough to because he still had one and you are only required to have one.

Fin Addict was it just an empty beer cash or did you have an open one in the console or on the floor
They seem to be trolling for folks to bust.

Tyler, it was a 16 oz. that was maybe had 2 ozs. in it! They never saw me drinking just the can on my Truck bed. I do acknowledge that I shouldn't have had it in my truck, i was just going to dump it at the Visitor's center.
I did have a phone conversation with a couple of them, including the Super and I guess the Rangers Super. I will post what I learned tomorrow. But do know that they definiately read this forum and didn't seem too happy!

Did you posts this story over on OB? Looks like it might be time for me to sharpen the legal knives on these guys again. They are a regular PR nightmare. One day this country is going to wake and realize the economy is being killed by the most inefficient employer of all time, the federal government (not including armed forces). They have ridiculous benefits, get to retire when 90% of the real workforce still has to work, seniority rules that promote the oldest sorriest employee and absolutely NO accountability to their real employers, taxpayers. Anyone else wonder why we even need them during the shutdown?

Defending the overtly unconstitutional policies of the Federal Government and overtly pervasive practices of its agents and representatives demands the same critical objections of those who spoke out against British oppression in the late 18th century. No true patriot or proponent of Liberty would approve of the Park Ranger's behavior that we've become so familiar with on PINS.

Fellas ...WITH ALL DO RESPECT OFFICER, I DO NOT CONSENT TO SEARCHES - AM I BEING ARRESTED (when no) - AM I FREE TO GO - HAVE A GOOD DAY SIR.

again a wise Attorney advised me of such

Trust me they will ask as many questions in the nicest ways and you may sometimes feel compelled to oblige to their request but don't.

If you consent to a sniff of a drink but not to a check of a bag .. Guess what's that's suspicious and could warrant probable cause - so just say no!

Oh we'll guys, it was great to be there a few years back. Well maybe a few more than that, how time flys! Actually, I moved up the coast a way about 26 years back. We fished the beach &jetties hard from 75 until 1988, back then, if you happened to see a ranger on a rare occasion, they usually just wanted a fishing report or share reports from others. They seemed to rotate out pretty often but always seemed like they were on an assignment of a lifetime, in paradise! It doesn't quiet appear to be the same nowadays. Tightlines....cC

thank you CopanoCruisin....I didn't get down the beach till the early '80's, but have seen the same shift....

I miss Perky.....

or they witness drinking so they can check out/verifiy that they're not over the limit I have no problem with that. I've seen a few stories about camps and tents being hit by drunks. I camp down there with my kids and share the public roadways so have no problem with Law Enforcement doing their job. If they save one camp from being run over by a drunk in 10 years then it's worth it.

No one in their right mind would disagree with that statement or the valuable function that the Rangers serve in this fashion...

what I'm talking about is the "hit with radar all the way out of the park" and them checking fishing licenses and snooping on PINS regulars all the while with THEIR HAND ON/NEAR THEIR GUNS....

THATS INTIMIDATION.....

Yes Becky, Perky, Pat and the others were out for the bad guys and were as nice as they could be to the general public unless you were speeding, or acting a fool. After Escoto came with Ranger Dede, things changed into fishing expeditions, pulling people over asking how the fishing was and then asking to search the vehicle for concealed weapons etc.

I am all for stamping out drunk driving etc but some of these are over the line.

Okay for all of you who think that it was okay for the ranger to check this guy I have one for you...
I few months ago I took my wife and 2 boys 5 and 9 down south of Bob Hall for some Sunday evening fun. When we left at dusk we decided to drive south to the sticks and come back up park road 22. My wife was behind the wheel and hadn't had a drop of alcohol, she just had a glass tumbler of cola sitting in her drink holder. When we pulled onto park road 22 we saw lights behind us. This young hard supple bum not so nice person comes to her window asking for id and insurance which we provided. He shines his flashlight at my kids in the back and all around the truck and asks her what she's drinking. She told him a coke and he asked her if he could smell her drink. My wife just hands over her drink even though I was fuming because he didn't have any probable cause because she was stone cold sober. He took a sniff and handed it back explaining that there were a lot of illegals and drug runners and he had to be cautious. WTF? My wife and kids are blonde and I'm Hispanic so I guess he though they were smuggling me in. Sarcastic...
He then used the age old excuse that our license plate light was burned out.
The plate has two lights and only one was out.
Absolutely ridiculous! Searching without cause, violating our constitutional rights at a federal park. I still get upset when I tell this story!

He didn't search anything, asked to sniff the drink... Yes the license plate light is a BS excuse but there's no harm done so who cares?

Obviously quite a few people care, hence the posts in this thread. This attitude of "well I have rights, but who cares if they step on them a little" is precipitating this type of behavior from our LEOs in the park. If I do not consent to an unlawful search, it does not equal an admission of guilt. Some of us just don't think it's any of their business.

Perhaps the time has come to start identifying the ones that are clearly harassing folks and abusing their power. If you get pulled over, get their name, their badge number, and the name/badge of their partner. Start calling the Super's office with the info, AND post it online for all to see. Once we identify the bad apples and apply a little "power of the people" pressure, maybe they'll get back to doing their jobs instead of wasting people's time. Again, the OP has been on this site for seven years, and his SECOND post was about these punk rangers. Let's not confuse clear abuse of power with protecting and serving.

What was the outcome of the call to the lawyer? Probably makes more sense to take their advice than to rely on the "Holiday Inn Express" judgements that get rendered online?

Just wondering.

I camped and fished PINS from the early 70's sometimes several times a year sometimes not for 2 years. The Park Rangers were always pleasant. Then came Joe Escato the new park ranger supervisor and the trouble started. So if you are going to write/call the supervisor, don't waste your breath. He is the problem. I go to Matagorda now in fact I plan on a trip there weekend after next. Got a river house rented but I'll never go back to PINS. L
