What do the Rangers do that is worthwhile or positive?
In your opinion - what could the Rangers be doing that's more positive for the community, for tourism, for the fish & wildlife, etc? |
I'm not sure, but think you're asking me?
I'd prefer if they just sat in thier little office and waited for us to call them for help and stayed out of the way. I don't think they do a whole lot that's positive to be honest, however there would definitely be a little more stupid behavior going around if they weren't present so having them there does help in some aspects but I'm unable to quantify how much honestly.
IMO Rangers need to stay out of the community, tourism, fish & wildlife, and just do their job. Part of their job is DUI patrol, so when they pull over someone who's been drinking or they witness drinking so they can check out/verifiy that they're not over the limit I have no problem with that. I've seen a few stories about camps and tents being hit by drunks. I camp down there with my kids and share the public roadways so have no problem with Law Enforcement doing their job. If they save one camp from being run over by a drunk in 10 years then it's worth it.

Okay for all of you who think that it was okay for the ranger to check this guy I have one for you...
I few months ago I took my wife and 2 boys 5 and 9 down south of Bob Hall for some Sunday evening fun. When we left at dusk we decided to drive south to the sticks and come back up park road 22. My wife was behind the wheel and hadn't had a drop of alcohol, she just had a glass tumbler of cola sitting in her drink holder. When we pulled onto park road 22 we saw lights behind us. This young hard supple bum not so nice person comes to her window asking for id and insurance which we provided. He shines his flashlight at my kids in the back and all around the truck and asks her what she's drinking. She told him a coke and he asked her if he could smell her drink. My wife just hands over her drink even though I was fuming because he didn't have any probable cause because she was stone cold sober. He took a sniff and handed it back explaining that there were a lot of illegals and drug runners and he had to be cautious. WTF? My wife and kids are blonde and I'm Hispanic so I guess he though they were smuggling me in. Sarcastic...
He then used the age old excuse that our license plate light was burned out.
The plate has two lights and only one was out.
Absolutely ridiculous! Searching without cause, violating our constitutional rights at a federal park. I still get upset when I tell this story! |

| Oh we'll guys, it was great to be there a few years back. Well maybe a few more than that, how time flys! Actually, I moved up the coast a way about 26 years back. We fished the beach &jetties hard from 75 until 1988, back then, if you happened to see a ranger on a rare occasion, they usually just wanted a fishing report or share reports from others. They seemed to rotate out pretty often but always seemed like they were on an assignment of a lifetime, in paradise! It doesn't quiet appear to be the same nowadays. Tightlines....cC |

Fin Addict was it just an empty beer cash or did you have an open one in the console or on the floor
They seem to be trolling for folks to bust. |
Tyler, it was a 16 oz. that was maybe had 2 ozs. in it! They never saw me drinking just the can on my Truck bed. I do acknowledge that I shouldn't have had it in my truck, i was just going to dump it at the Visitor's center.
I did have a phone conversation with a couple of them, including the Super and I guess the Rangers Super. I will post what I learned tomorrow. But do know that they definiately read this forum and didn't seem too happy! |

I was joking about what I said earlier! I love the Rangers and agree with 100% of what they do! I feel so safe down the beach and am glad they are there serving the American people and doing their duty! _________________

He didn't search anything, asked to sniff the drink... Yes the license plate light is a BS excuse but there's no harm done so who cares? Duck hunting over the last 20 years I'm on the road quite a bit 1am-4am driving and been pulled over countless times by highway patrol and local small town popo, they shine the light in my eyes and ask where I'm going and I tell them I'm headed out hunting and they send me on my way. What's the big deal? The alternative is for them to never bust the drunks and your wife and kids could end up in a head on collission on the way home instead. When I was growing up they had "insurance checks" and everyone on the road was pulled over, lot of DUI's handed out at those. I guess everyone hated them too because they quit doing that long ago.
edit: The only time I got heated was when one of them wrote me a warning for "failure to maintain a single lane" to support the excuse to pull me over. _________________ JJ |

I'm sure my harrassment day will come, but since 2006 I've still yet to be pulled over by a Ranger down there. Hopefully I won't be switching to the "been harassed" camp any time soon. |

The harm done was that he had no real "probable cause", just an excuse to harass law abiding citizens. This type of behavior by law should never be tolerated. You seem to forget that they are there to "protect and serve" not "harass and torment", as these clowns seen to relish doing.
There is ALWAYS harm done when leo's cross over the line. It harms the system, their image, public trust, the citizens of this country, etc.. _________________ Now that food has replaced my sex life I can't even get into my own pants!!!!!!!!

Yeah, too bad you're not concerned about all the people that die on Texas roads due to drunk drivers. Perhaps when it's your butt in a crack... _________________ JJ

He doesn't need probably cause to ask to sniff a drink, only people looking for trouble or guilty would have a problem with that. I would have a serious problem if he searched the vehicle, gave her a sobriety test, etc... A quick stop and check and send you along your way is not a big deal in my mind. Like I said I've gone through that probably more than anyone here being on the road through small towns at night and it's never bothered me. Then again I don't make a habit of keeping open containers in my truck and don't roll down the road smoking a doobie so I have nothing to worry about. _________________ JJ |
