According to the Park Ranger that I spoke with, the bollards from Kleberg to North Beach are also chained off. The road north of the guard shack is also chained off.

I guess the ranger Jeb talked to was on the site? If so he/she could be patrolling the park for the same pay he/she is getting to keep people out.

The ranger was on site. From what I've read, they have 14 rangers (out of 60 employees) that actually didn't go on furlough and are reportedly patrolling the park/adjacent boundary waters (Laguna side). Looking at 2012 payroll statistics, they had 16 folks with the titles of "Park Ranger"... so it's probably safe to say that all of the park rangers employed at PINS are still working - yet it's deemed relevant to shut the park down - go figure.

That would make too much sense.
We're talking gubbmint here. Rational and sensible don't belong in the same conversation!

I do not understand why it has to be closed. I still have to work and am currently not getting a check. So if there are park rangers working seems like it should be open..

I was reading last night that the House of Representatives has voted 407-0 to pay all of the furloughed workers when the government does start back up. I'm sure the Senate will do the same.

It doesn't make me feel bad. I just got back from vacation and all the National parks were closed. I really wanted to see Zion....no could do. There's nothing you can do about it.
