Hit the beach just north of the packery jetties yesterday afternoon with a half a dozen croaker and hopes of some nice surf trout. I got there late hence the reason for only bringing a half dozen with me, I baited up my first croaker and headed out to fish the first gut. After fishing for about 10 minutes with nothing happening I look down the gut and gulls and pelicans are POUNDING the first gut about 150 yards from me. I run back to get a fresh croaker and head down to the action. I get with in casting distance gave the pretty large croaker a toss and off he goes, right in the middle of the chaos. Within seconds I feel a heavy THUMP drop the rod tip expecting some line to be taking off, only to have my thumb burned by the braid leaving my reel so fast. First thought was wow big jack on, then thats when something happened I never expected, still with the fish peeling drag a beautiful silver fish comes out of the water and starts tail walking time after time down the gut. My heart starts RACING as I realize that I have hooked my first tarpon, finally now that I can see metal from my spool I have the fish stopped and turned towards me. fighting against the fish and the current I start making some gains, with the fish only about 15 yards in front of me he gets a second burst of energy and come completely out of the water at the same time my hook comes out of his mouth. It was literally slow motion and my heart sank, but still exciting none the less to feel that power on light tackle and to see a tarpon in the first gut.
Now that is done, how do y'all fish croaker in the surf. I was doing it with my normal chatter weights, should I be using a little more weight then that?[/code] _________________ Bad fisherman blame their bait, or the lack there of. |
