| Earlier in the week the forecast for today looked pretty good. I called Chris and asked if he wanted to make a run out of Packery and try a couple wrecks in shallow water for some state water snapper. He said he would check his schedule and get back in touch on Friday. Friday we talked and both agreed we would take a look on Saturday before making a final decision about a trip in the gulf on Sunday. On my way to Port A. Saturday around noon I stopped off at the North Packery Jetty to take a look. All I saw was whitecaps with a gusty wind right out of the NE. I called Chris and said it looked like a state water snapper trip was out of the question. He has a 17' Whaler Striper Edition and it would be a wet bumpy ride out there in that stuff. I asked where his second option was and he said he would like to try the Laguna. That sounded "Great" to me, especially after reading all the good reports coming from that area earlier in the week. He said he wanted to launch at Marker 37 around 7 am. so everything was set early Saturday afternoon. |

I checked wunderground radar just before leaving and I could see lots of small blips, on the radar in the gulf. I figured these small blips would turn into thunderstorms as forecasted for today. I left Portland around 6 am hoping I would be on time after a quick stop at the Portland Donut Palace! I arrived at Marker 37 a few minutes early, beating Chris by a couple minutes. I went inside to pay the launch fee and get a bag of ice, hoping we would need it for a couple keepers. Both Chris and I throw lures and if we get lucky a good day for us in the Upper Laguna will be a couple nice keeper specks and maybe a red or two. I tell Chris since it's his boat, he get to pick the spots. He heads south down the intercoastal and makes a stop after a 10 or 15 minute run. We try on the east side of the "Ditch" along some spoils with cabins and piers running to the west off these small islands of seclusion. I can only imagine how nice it would be to own one for a weekend get away. We try this area for 15 minutes or so drifting to the south with the NE wind. We only catch a small throwback here along with a few light hits. Chris heads us back toward the intercoastal with his trolling motor getting ready to head further south. I ask where his next stop is. He say's the west side on the intercoastal a few miles south. I mention that the top guy of corpusfishing, "AcousTennis" is catching 50 every morning in the "Backyard." He asks where that is and I reply, "Not Here!"

After a little coaxing Chris crosses the intercoastal and heads west for a mile or so. We stop and I notice that the water we are fishing in is a little deeper than the depth we were in when we had caught a couple keepers a few weeks back. We drift here for 10 minutes without a bite. I mention that there were also a few reports of some being caught along the "King Ranch Shoreline." We quickly reel reel em' up and start heading west again. While running I start seeing a few birds milling around and what looks like a few slicks. I tap Chris on the shoulder and mention what I am seeing. I suggest we run a few hundred yards back to the north and give it a try. With-in a couple minutes we are drifting and I hook my first fish. It turned out to be an 18" red, but at least there seems to be a few fish where we are fishing. In a few minutes Chris get a good fish on a red "Queen Sparkle Beetle." After a short battle he puts a solid 24" trout in the boat. We get some more action from a bunch of throwbacks, but no more keepers. Chris starts up and heads back to the north a couple miles before we start another drift. As soon as we drift into 3 1/2 foot of water, we start getting bites again. I finally catch a nice keeper speck and Chris puts another nice one in the boat. After 15 or 20 minutes and no more keepers, we decide to try the King Ranch shoreline. We head west and motor toward the bank until we are in a little over 3 foot of water and start working down the shoreline. There is more floating grass in this area, but the water looks just right. This would be our final drift as we watched a few thunderstorms building back to the north. On this drift I finally get a nice 23" red and Chris adds another keeper speck. As we near Marker 37 we get hit with a few hard sprinkles, but nothing to bad.

Pictured is the Cordell floater diver that Chris had his most action on today. As usual, for me it's red soft plastics.
