Is that a 1 oz powder or 1-1/8? The autos I have don't like anything but the 1-1/8. Picky SOB's. |

Rios is a 1oz. My browning cycles 1oz loads fine if the dram is 3 or more. Drams is what measures the powder higher the dram hotter the load. My remington 1187 on the other hand as to be brass and 1 1/8 oz. but it's chamberd in 3 1/2.therefor I use only sure shot heavy dove _________________ Thanks Bubba |

dram equivalent is a throw-back to black powder days...
back when shot shells used blk pwdr, they were loaded to certain dram weights of powder.
nowdays w/smokeless, the velocity of the loads are shown as dram equivalent ratings.
a lot of shell manufactors have since changed to velocity ratings on the load.
so instead of say 1 1/8 oz w/3 3/4 dram eq, the box may have 1 1/8oz at 1300fps. _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |

This is what I see more often than dram. I always had an issue shooting 1 oz loads with a semi auto vs. a 1-1/8. 1-1/8 always performed as needed unlike the 1 oz I bought, so I've always looked for 1-1/8 oz and never really paid attention to the FPS unless I was buying steel shot for ducks. |

After getting back into Duck hunting last year after a long vacation from it , I tried several loads and ended up with 3" #4 Black clouds.
Keep in mind this is in farm ponds and shooting them in the decoys .
Not all loads are good for all types of hunting. I do tend to like the flightstopper shot though . I purchased a flat of them at the end of last season to make sure I would have them for the start of this season. |

I usually use Remington sportsman loads or winchester super X due to cost. Both work great. We usually shoot decoying birds only. I don't see a need to spend $25 on a box of shells, when a box 1/2 the price will knock em down just as good. I've used Kent, & Heavy Metal which work great too, but again, the price is a little up there for me.
FYI- Found these recomendations:

my old browning a-5 ('50's model humpback) and my rem 1100 (old, too)(26in skeet barrel)( love it on first day fat whitewings) shoot the cheap dove loads and cycle every time.
for early teal the 1100 shoots the cheap #6 steel every time, too.
for bigger stuff like geese, I have a Mossy 835 pump(1st yr issue)blued w/wood that runs any 12ga shell known.
that big rascal will give ya a fat lip w/3.5's if you aint got it tight
only use the big shells for pass shooting geese at the camp. 3in are what I use in the ricefield. _________________ the creepy uncle that scares the kids.... |
