I am done spending the money buying pop-up style tents. Over the past 5 years I would say that I have gone through at least 7! $$$$ Done! I am pretty good at repairing them now but would like to see if yall have an alternative efficient method for sun protection. Please post up some photos and how to steps. Thanks in advanced. These S. Texas winds can easily ruin belongings...

I know what you mean the popups break at the expansion points or the pup up spring locks rust out. Some of the guys use parachutes or big blue tarps tied off between two vehicles.

I stopped with those also. Pos if you ask me did everything to tie them down. Put buckets with sand and strapped them to trucks nada. Sorry I can't help with a new idea . Just started soaking the kids in sunblock they don't sit long enough for me to Getty another one just yet. Good luck though.

Exactly! Freaky thing happened about 4 years ago we had setup camp at Access rd2 and saw a little sand devil (mini tornado), got closer and closer and before we knew it all heck broke loose! 2 canopies destroyed and belongings scattered everywhere! Had a member of our camp trip and sprain her ankle during the chaos. Seems like ever since then my luck with them has stunk! I tried to youtube for ideas but came us empty in my search results. Guessing I need to go into the canopy making business Wink

Interestingly, of all the "skeletons" of shades that litter the beaches after just about every weekend, I've noticed that nearly every one is broken at the same point. Inherent design flaw??? or a steady source of income for the manufacturer???

Old parachutes work well. If you can find a military surplus store you can get them there for cheap or search the web.

I reccomend a 12' cargo canopy for single use but you can get a 28' personnel canopy and anchor it up between 2 vehicles and have an amazing setup.

It takes a bit of engineering and some work but they are awesome and make use of the wind around here. Tie some ends off to something you can bury in the sand.

For years I've been using a military 2.5 ton cargo tarp held up with camoflage net poles. Tie one end to the truck, the other to buried 5 gallon buckets or another truck. Shades about a 30'x40' space. Usually hang a clothesline between the poles.

Got all of it, (including the buckets) out of the dumpster at my reserve unit.

X2.....we've been using parachutes for a couple years....tie them off roof racks or around the door, and the wind fills them up and provides shade...packs very small, no moving parts, and a cinch to put up...you can get one delivered to your house for less than $40, which makes them way cheaper than Ez-ups too!

I picked up a folding bimini top from an old boat that is in decent shape, and I'm going to give that a shot here at some point as well....just for funzies...

I have been using a good quality beach umbrella for years. Good for about three people.

I've had the same pop up shade for going on five years. No problems. Got it at Academy on sale for $69. Always rinse it with fresh water after taking it down at the beach, and hit all the moving bits with WD40 when I get home.

Get you a few 12" long 1 x 2 s, wrap your cord around that and bury it a foot down on each corner, and that thing ain't going anywhere.

Try a Super-Brella. Has tiedowns for the top and the center pole spikes into the ground at an angle. The sideflaps also tie down to spikes.

seen a pic of a member w/a jib sail between two trucks...
he drives an older big red f350
I have 4 alum telescoping GI tent poles I'm gonna try w/blue plastic tarp next time...
set 'em in some short PVC sand spikes and guy 'em
Calcutta cane would prolly work, too w/ the blue plastic tarp (henceforth known as BPT Laughing )
guy down the 4 corners w/a tent spike... should work below gale force winds...
and if it blows off, just either reset or quit... no rinky-dink frame bent to hell...
