Buddy of mine caught this at the land cut today and they have no idea what it is. I'm not sure either since its the first time I have seen it. They said it was about 10" long but I'm guessing closer to 8" long.

Looks like a barred grunt, AKA butter perch. We catch a few here and there on PINS.

More specifically, Conodon nobilis.

But not really a "perch". It's in the same Family as Tomates, Sailor's Choice, White grunt, and Black margate. All pretty good table fare.

BUT, .... Pigfish (a.k.a., the bait-stealer of the Packery Jetties) is also in this Family, and I would HIGHLY NOT RECOMMEND you try and eat a pigfish!! Mad [That's the voice of experience, right there].

Where do you catch them other than in the mouth. Do you catch them in the surf or at the jetties , and piers, and what is the bait of choice. Do they hit artificial ?
