The 870 Express is crap.
The Wingmasters, not so much.

Actually the best workhorse duck/goose gun made is the Russian Baikal mp153. I have been regularly shooting sporting clays and hunting everything that fly's for years. We don't get to fish as much up here, so we make it up with our shotgunning. Obviously you have heard of the AK47! The MP153 is made with the same durability and is readily available in this country. I have one and it is the best auto shotgun I have ever owned. Stronger built and more durable that Beneli, Beretta, Browning or any of the others. It will shoot anything from 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 and you can load different sizes at the same time. It will shoot them all without a hiccup and it is built like a tank. A few years ago some poeple in Europe ran a test of autos. They shot Berettas, Brownings, Bennellies, Baikals, etc.. They shot continuously, and all of the shotguns broke down except for the Baikal. It went 50 thousand rounds continuous firing without a hiccup. You can find the test on the net if you dig around for it. They even dipped the barrel in water to quench it so they could keep shooting. If you want to watch a really durable gun in action, watch this video:

Bighead, you aint kidding about duck guns taking abuse. Mine has been soaked in saltwater, caked in mud, kids knocked it off the boat into 4' of water at the dock and sunk with the case on and sat there for 10 minutes until I stripped down to go get it, even used it to bash an alligator over the head once (which was not very effective). Every now and then the whole case and all will get soaked with seawater when the bay is rough and a couple times I've not been able to clean the guns for a few days after the trip and that thing's been covered. Wipe it down with RemOil and scratch the rust off with fine steel wool and it's back in business. _________________ JJ |

mossberg maverick 88. cheap and dependable. Mine has been used for three seasons averaging 2 hunts a week and is still going strong
i have the stoeger 2000 and I have had nothing but problems with it. some of my buddies have one as well and they have had no issues. I might have bought a lemon. but even after i sent it back to get repaired it still wouldn't load correctly all the time.
I think if you're going to get an semi you might as well spend the money and get a good one. But I'm sold on the 88 for ducks. won't shoot 3.5's for geese though |

Unless you are very careful about cleaning your guns, AND careful while out duck hunting, I recommend a cheaper shotgun. Salt water duck hunting is very hard on your gun.
Mine is a 870 Express. It works great. No, it doesn't win any fashion contests, but the birds don't know the difference.

They have been making 870's since the late forties or early fifties ( forget which) for a reason. The damn things work, well. I have a wingmaster I bought with hay hauling money in 1975. There have been years that a case to a case and a half of shells have run through it. I have used it for a boat paddle when I broke a shear pin to get to the launch. Then killed ducks with it that afternoon, without cleaning it. I replaced it with a Stoger then. Benelli. Down here I shoot the Stoger. If I am home I shoot the Benelli, except opening day when I still shoot the 870.
Ask any guide between houma and stuttgart if they had to choose one gun they are going to tell you 870. |

I own around 20 shotguns from crappy old single shot to "why the hell did I pay this much" engraved over/unders. I use an 870 for duck hunting. _________________ Give a Man a Fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a Man to Fish and he will sit in a boat And drink Beer all day. Fish 24:7 |

I have the 2000. Some of them still have rough edges on the bolt, extractor and ejector parts. Super fine grit file or steel wool will smooth it down and they cycle everything fine. The I first batch of Browning gold hunters had the same problem.
Its a good gun, i would buy another. |

All good guns for one reason or another , I started guiding waterfowl back in the '80s at Katy with a BPS , still have the gun and it works well.
I shoot a Beretta now for ducks, a benelli for doves and clays but I havent hunted in the salt .
I found this past season that I like the Black cloud 3 " # 4s . so well I purchased a flat at the end of season so I wouldnt be caught short early this year. |

The camo finish is more forgiving in salt then matte, no pores to start a rust bloom in just wipe off with a damp cloth. Started out with a Beretta 390 sliver mallard 3" I picked up for $400, lost it in a fire and replaced with the A391 Extrema. Both bought used and have/had plenty of rounds left in them too outlast me.
Just food for thought, with all the tommy tacticals out there wanting sawed off guns finding a quality waterfowl shotgun cheap in a pawn shop is pretty easy. _________________ What's good for me ain't necessarily good for the weak minded.... |

| Russ - How do you like that extrema? I have a Beretta O/U. I have never shot a Beretta Auto. I have heard you have to clean them after each hunt as they dont do well with grit and grime. Other folks swear by them. |

| I love my silver mallard. I picked it up for $200 because there was "something wrong with it". Turns out the exhaust valve and spring were on the wrong side of each other. Pulled up the schematice and it was about a 30 second fix. Best gun purchase I have ever made. It also worked awesome this year on high flying doves. |
