Port Aransas Jetty's, the kingfish bite was on and just about as good as it get's! Ten by 10am, four over 20, one over 30.
We fit in just fine with the "Mosquito Fleet." Everyone was catching fish and having a great time!
The "New Kingfisher" out of "Deep Sea Headquarters," with one of the best, Captain Marvin Horner at the helm, headed out to sea.

Headed to the gulf platform. Lots of bait and small bonita. Tried a couple rigs, first spot, one single, second spot, triple hitter, all landed and released! It just does not get any better than this, flat seas and solid action! A full box, it's "Miller Time!" |

Funny thing is I was the captain on this boat for six years, 14 years ago, so it is very nice to be back with old friends and new ones, once again, hearing those engines roar from a different spot, "the Deck." Back to fishing, things changed drastically overnight. The conditions at the jetty's were not very good. The water was a lot rougher and dirtier with the current roaring from the north making the north jetty apron look like a washing machine. We never got a bite there. After 20 minutes the captain said reel them in and we took off to the south. I have to say, I would have never went south with the current running like it was, but I was still confident, a few of the kings that were at the Gulf Platform the day before would still be there. Well, I will say this, I think all those big kings that were at the Port Aransas Jetty's the day before had invaded the big platform and every one of the smaller gas wells. One big difference from the day before, the water had changed colors. It was no longer emerald green, but "Big King Green!" If you fish enough out there, you will notice that when the water gets gin clear most of the kingfish are "Bullets." A lot of the really large "Kings" are caught in clear lime green water, but the best color is what we call "King Green," very clear water with a blue green tint.

As we were trolling up to the first spot we had a large(over 25lbs) king go vertical on the ribbonfish on the rod from the "Rocket Launcher" off the bridge. I watched in amazement as that silver monster went so high it would have cleared the tuna tower on this boat. I looked for a black skirt hanging from the fishes mouth as it rocketed back into the gulf. It had bit the bait, but the leader had never moved. Captain Reese reeled in his line and the bait had been bit off right behind the head. How that fish had missed all three hooks, I will never know. We never had another bite at this spot so we slow trolled to the next pipe. As soon as the baits dropped, all three rods went down. My problem, I was putting a bait out as I was moving another rod to another rod holder. I had my thumb on the spool of that one as I was trying to put the other rod with a fish on it in a holder. The middle rod had a screamer on as one of the guys on the charter picked it up. As the line was peeling off the reel he asked, do I hit the lever to stop him. I meant to say no, but since I am always getting everything backwards, I said, "Yes." Needless to say, as soon as that Penn 309 was flipped into freespool, the game was over on that reel. The second fish quickly came off, but the one I was still thumbing and the fish was still running, was still on. I was able the flip that Penn 210 into gear by dragging it across my chest, finally being able to hand the rod off. We landed that one which was around 20 lbs. and the first fish of the day.

Captain Reese started working every pipe and rig since we were the only boat there at this time. The action was fast and furious with those "Greenbacks" trying to tear up our old tackle at every spot. We ended up with several over 20 with the largest going 25lbs. As the 12th one went in the box, that 150 quart cooler lid did not want to close. I rearranged the fish in the box so the lid would shut and double counted just to make sure. I asked one of the guys what time it was and he replied, "10:30." Two days in a row with Captain Reese back at the helm, on a kingfish charter and we had limited out before 11AM both days. I guess this salty old crew had a couple good days left in them! Thanks Captain for "The Memories". |

Captain Mark Mueller was on the 35 those two days with his mate, Nathan. I think Captain Mark usually runs the 31 or either boat, if only one is booked. I am just a fill-in or stand-by or, actually I'm not really sure what I am! |
