Whatsup everyone,
not exactly related to fishing but who cares, no one's fishing anymore anyways, they're only pulling weed off lines or off lures or...well you get the idea. Thank God for kayaks, inflatable boats, rubber rafts, heck, anything that floats and can get us off the beach when it's weedy.
Anyways, came across some goofy markers yesterday during yet another random PINS hike, photo, explore, get attacked by snakes, go without food or water, etc trip. Dang, I love to hike that Island....so back to the topic, if anyone has any idea what these markers could be related to, by all means, let a man know. They are in a oil field related area up north, but this particular area was only active during the 50's, 60's and some into the 70's. It's only about a half mile behind the dune line or so, but there were no signs of a pipeline anywhere in the area. (They are marked normally.) However....these markers WERE alongside a 50's era track road that used to run from Bob Hall south down the Island....Appreciate any ideas!!! Peace, Love, and weed! No, not that kind...
That's all the pics I've got of that, but I'll attach a few more for coolness factor!
Can you see what's hiding in this pic?
From where this was found, and it being a 30-30 shell, we can place this shell as being possibly from the 1890's onward (invention of the 30-30 shell by Browning himself). From the location, and that there was more than one shell, my guess is just an Island bum like myself deer hunting.
This is a lot further south down Island, and is one of the water holes/tanks for the cattle. Water tank is gone, but does anyone have any idea what the concrete tank would have been for?
And yes, I tasted the water, and yes it was fresh and pretty darn sweet!
Anyways, before I get carried away with pics, thanks for any ideas, and weed free fishing for all... _________________ Protect Padre at all costs for future generations to use and enjoy and never forget our freedoms aren't free.

No sure about the markers, but the cement tank is a water trough used to hold water for livestock. There was probable a windmill near at one time or water was hauled to it _________________ Wishin I was fishin!

| This is just a wild guess about the markers.... Since there were water tanks around for cattle and the posts look like fence posts for barb wire, perhaps the numbers acted like the mile markers on the beach today.... a way of telling the cowboys which sections to work or where a fence was down. |

Pic #2 showed two post.
Were there more post?
Did you get Lat and Long on the post?
Was the same number on both post?
These are the first questions that I can think of.
Love your post/adventures.
Thanks

Thanks for all the ideas everybody....there's just so many day to day things on the Island that have been lost due to the passing of the generations. It seems I'm forever finding things that are out of place, at least to me and my wanderings. The general consensus seems to be a windmill at one point in time, which makes sense because the Island was converted to a windmill system by Pat's son Burton, at least partly. How they got a concrete tank way down south is beyond me.
Cliff, only those two posts in the area. And I did pull a set of coords for them. The same number, 35, was on both posts, on the top and on the bottom burnt into the wood. Shoulda call you, you do this stuff more than any of us! _________________ Protect Padre at all costs for future generations to use and enjoy and never forget our freedoms aren't free.

TT, I doubt that the tank was hauled down the island. I would bet the cement (in bags) was hauled down in a wagon and the water trough was poured in place. The water to mix the cement was most likely drawn from the well(windmill) our hauled. The other highly likely possiblity is that island water from one of the "natural holdng ponds", llike the one in your pictures, was used. I know of plenty of water troughs , some larger than this one, that the cowboys built in the remote part of several ranches across South Texas, and all the material was hauled in via horseback and wagon!
BTW ,Thanks for the post. The history of PINS is and has always been fascinating to me. _________________ Wishin I was fishin!

| The ones that I have seen( concrete holding tanks) are an overflow from a windmill well system. Windmill pumps water into a main holding tank for house or structure, when that tank is full the float won't allow water to enter sending water to the over flow tank used for livestock and wildlife. |
