My favorite way of fishing is topwaters, but I have not tried it much in the saltwater.
In the stock tanks of south Texas, they are a sure bet on an early morning or late afternoon.
Are there topwaters that are effective in bays and surf that do not require walkng the dog with the lure? If so, which ones and which colors.
I am not opposed to walking the dog, but I do not have the set up yet for it.
Also, everyone says the topwater bite is on right now, generally speaking, how long does this last?
Do topwaters work at night?
I assume you hit the sand pockets with the topwaters like you do with other lures and/or bait.
Thanks for the help |

| I use topwaters year round and have caught fish working them all different ways. Its however the fish are wanting them. Walking the dog is the most efficent way I would say. Glow in the dark plugs are awesome at night just work them a lilttle bit slow so the fish can locate them. Put a split ring on front and some size number one owner hooks and your ready to go. |

Topwater lures by Rapala. Great lures. Try bone, pink, and black. Lots of other color paterns that work as well. _________________ "Bring your friends, we'll give em' a ride in SUCK MY WAKE" |

| You asked about not having to "walk the dog"retrieve. I've had good luck with poppers like Chug Bugs or Pappa Dogs. On the Chug Bug, I change the hook useing VMC's #2 on back and a #4 on the front. Also can't go wrong with the bone color or the others mentioned before. Good Luck D. |

confidence in working your topwater is the number one key to success.....also don't be afraid to grind topwaters for a year or two to get the hang of it.....yes, I said a year or two, not fifteen minutes......took me a couple years, but I have ultimate confidence in topwaters (check out the thread "first and last casts" of me and tyler fishing the other day, those fish were all on toppies)
Fishing is a life-long obsession, and too many people want the short cut or "cheat codes" on what to use, where, when, how etc......
the correct idea is that fishing is all in the experience, learning new things on your own, and figuring out what works and why ON YOUR OWN, or with some good close friends......its NOT about filling the cooler.....its about the times, and sometimes it takes time......
good luck, and if you still want the quick way, hire a guide......
and I throw spooks almost exclusively.....
and ironmanstan, that's EXACTLY what it's about, the "chick-chick (pause) KA-BLAM!!" its a feeling unlike any other watching that wake come up behind your lure, and resisting every nerve in your body telling you to set the hook before the bite!!!! Patience is a virtue.... |

I've found a lot of the techniques I used when I fished topwaters for bass work in the salt too. They need a little honeing but it gives you a general idea of where to start.
Last year I was determined to be more successful fishing topwaters. So what I did was picked one topwater lure I thought would work well and stuck with it thru thick and thin. Sometimes I caught fish and sometimes I didn't but it was one of the ways I started getting familar with when, where, and how to fish that lure. Its always tempting for me to try and change lures because that one isn't working. But instead of changing lures, I'll change techniques, (faster, slower, little jerk, big twitch, whatever) or change colors. It is a grind but I feel far more comfortable with that lure now than I did before.
Its how I got started, maybe it will work for you.

The Skitterwalk is a dog-walker.
Try the chug bugs. If you want to try another lure that works for the salt, is the Poppa-Dog. It is a dog-walker with a popping lip. It can do both.
Another freshwater topwater that will work is a buzzbait.
I have found that dog-walkers are the most effective and efficient. I think the reason is that the lure is always moving and making noise. I believe that saltwater fish are more aggressive feeders and will make a much longer run at a lure than a bass. IE, I think I get lots of reaction strikes because I keep it moving and talkin to 'em. I do occassionally work them slow, but I haven't had to do it very often. |

Trust me the other evening when Snookered got that big trout anyone in their right mind would have not tried topwater fishing in the whitecaps. Fortunately Snookered and I are nuts! |
