Hey guys...
Any preference on which way to set it up.....
Fishbite first...then piece of shrimp
Piece of shrimp and then fishbite..
I have tried fishbite first and then piece of shrimp and have had good results...but I sure go thru alot of shrimp that way...

Just a thought....

I guess it doesn't matter what you try the first time. As hard as it is to get the fishbites off it will most probably end up shrimp second after that.

Or just use a treble hook. Then you have to figure one fishbite and two shrimp or two fishbites and one shrimp.

And this would allow having 1 crab and 1 shrimp or both shrimp or both crab, but either way you can also alternate colors to add to the effectiveness. When going for black drum, I always use 1 piece of shrimp FB and one piece of crab FB, 2 different colors and alternate color combos on each of my rods but I usually just use a circle hook and not a treble.

Way back when ............
We first started fishing PINS in the late '90s I ran into an older man who had a system that caught lots of fish. We were staying at the campground on PINS in the motorhome. He took pity on us and took me to his camp and showed me how he rigged and set up. Made all his leaders, double drop, and he used only trebble hooks. The #6 xxx saltwater Mustad. The trick is to take the trebble off, push the shank of the hook up through the body of the shrimp so it comes out between the shell segments, then put it back on the leader snap. The hooks have one leg that is welded on, that is the one you want in front inbedded in the body of the bait with the tail laying between the other two legs of the hook. If you do a fishbite sandwitch put the fishbite on first, just cut a small slot in the large end of it so that it's just short of the front leg of the hook when you push the shank up through the fishbite. That way the hook points are all free and the fishbite is held by the shank, if they try to get away with the fishbite they hook themselves up. If the bait snatchers get all the shrimp the fishbite is still there, all the action of the bait snatchers will usually get the attention of someone bigger if you leave it long enough. I don't remember that mans name, he used to fish PINS every other year. Then Alaska on the off years. The older couple that were hosts at the PINS campground knew him well and had asked him to help us out, I guess it was kind'a obvious we didn't know what the he!! we were doing!!! That was before the taggs for oversize reds were available. That guy was catching reds in front of the campground that could have been new state records on and off over the years....... 60-70-80 lbs + regular and bigger on and off. That's the stretch of beach between the sticks, no vehicles. Had to tote everything down from the camp ..........

The only thing he asked in return for the info he gave us was to share it. Said that there were enough fish in the surf to go arround if you knew how to catch 'em and that to many people would not help new folks learn what to use on the beach. The only thing I've added to the stuff he showed us is that I use a #4 trebble when the large Pomps are running because they can tear a #6 out sometimes. I also use some colered beads but that's another story for the Pompano days........

Thats a great trick. Thanks so much for sharing, I'll have to give it a try next time I'm out.

Those little #6 trebbles will put some big fish on the sand. Some black drum I almost could not lift came to the beach with one locking his lips up. I still can't figure the Pomps though, they pull so hard it tears their lips off I guess. But a #4 will get 'em in, unless they brake something else.

Thanks for the tip Rutro.
I read it twice and played with a soft plastic and still can't figure it out ... Got any pics of the setup?

if I'm understanding Rutro correctly, I think he pushes the hook shank up thru the shrimp body near the head and then onto the snap.
to rebait involves taking the hook off.

Yeah that's the thing .. This is a treble hook right?
That little shank isn't big enough to get through the head much less the body .. Maybe I'm missing something

Hmmm...pushing the shrimp thru the shank..? Interesting... What I was confused is when he says this "The trick is to take the trebble off"...not too sure what that means. But after reading it a few times more...and also reading KWEBER's post....I think I get it. I plan to use this technique this weekend at PINS....
Thanks for everyone's tips....
