Hey i guys ive kind of been wanting to get into shark fishing and already have an idea of what rod and reel to get but i dont really know what to use as bait or where to go. I was thinking the end of the packery channel by the surf would be a good place Pins and bob hall to. Bait wise i dont really know im guessing whiting bonito crevale jack and stingray. Any tips and advice helps thanks

I've always done good on whiting but can use any of those stingray and jack.

Study it and it will give you a good idea of what you need, what to make, what to take with you, etc. Its not a perfect guide, the rest is all about spending hundreds of hours on the beach and piers fishing. If you want small sharks, fish the piers. You do have a chance of getting a big shark but not always. If you want to get into big sharks, you need to hit the beach and kayak out your baits. Its always good to go with a partner when you go to the beach for sharks. I'm currently rigging up my kayak for both BTB and kayaking out baits.

Match what bait you use to what bait should be in the area you plan to fish. Example now would be a great time to use sheepshead,black drum, whiting, or pompano. Thats whats all in the surf. When the mullet are running try a large mullet. Thats your best bet as far as baits to use.

Fresh large pieces of cut whiting are good and a large fresh chunk of mullet, when they are in season and legal to catch and keep, might be best! Your going to have fun thus summer, if you do your research and are able to hit the surf when the conditions get right. Good luck and I am waiting for your fishing reports this summer! Wink

I find that just about any type of fresh bloody bait will attract a bite. All you need is a kayak to get the bait out at least 200 yards off the beach. You will get a good bite near 80 percent of the time. Actually hooking the shark and landing it will vary depending on your equipment and how long you let the shark run before setting the hook. Expect a black tip most of the time with other species about 1 out of 10 catches. MAKE SURE you have the means to safely release your catch within a few minutes of landing the fish. Bolt cutters work best because you won't need to traumatize these sacred creatures by trying to rip the hook out of their mouth with pliers. Use mild steel hooks instead of stainless and they will rust out rather quickly.

Like they said ^^, match the hatch and use what you're catching in the surf. Most common baits for me are whiting, skipjack, mullet, jack chunks, and hardhead.

As for location, out of the 3 you mentioned I would have a high preference for PINS on the condition that you have a 4x4 and a kayak to get the baits out.

I have a kayak but I'm not sure if it would be fit to run bait out. It's like a 9 or 10 foot kayak that's not open faced its kind of like the pelican pulse. And couldn't i just cast from shore. Just to clarify though I'm not really going for the big sharks anything 6 feet or less will make my day. And how far could a 2 wheel drive truck on pins. Last question for now where could I find a bait stand that sells large mullet, whiting, stingray any shark bait really.

soak some squid in the surf... you'll get bait.
and if it happens to be a hard head, clip the spines and put it out.
oh yeah! rays love squid... and sharks love rays. clip it's spine, too.

ND, like some have already mentioned...Match the hatch! Cast a bait rod out and what ever you catch....use for bait....and yes, if you did nothing but cast baits for shark you will be pleasently surprised! As far as numbers go, I catch 10x more sharks no more then 50 yds from dry land then i do on yakked baits....but the size range is no more then 6 to 6 and a half ft.

As far as the hooks....take them OUT! They dont rust out as quikley as one might think Wink

Cant really help ya out with the 2wd thing other then know your tides and use your head...Good luck!

I have seen sharks with spines stuck in their mouths, but without trying to get my face bit off, i couldnt really tell whether they were hard head spines or stingray barbs. Im one of those guys that wont use HH for bait....why...i have no answer, but i know plenty of folks that have. If thats all you can catch for bait then ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Im Hard headed i guess. (pun intended) Razz
