The largest trout I have ever caught in Nueces Bay was 9.25. I caught this beauty in 1998 on an artificial rootbeer-green shrimptail in what I call "Odem Bay." My friend, Richard Bueno and his girlfriend was with me on this day. When I hooked it I asked Richard to get the net. He asked if I wanted him to net it when it was time. I replied "Only if it is a red." Well, a few minutes later I screamed, "GIVE ME THE NET!!!" Richard obliged and got to the back corner of the boat as the huge speck neared. I was able to net this one quickly and looked on in amazement at this beauty. I weighed it the next day at Roy's Bait and Tackle.

Two of my favorite lures I use in Nueces Bay. I always start out throwing the 4" "Queen Sparkle Beetle" at daylight and usually switch to the paddle tails as the sun rises in the east.

I am a State Investigator. I have many responsibilities. One of my required duties includes monitoring the water quality of the bays and estuaries here in the Coastal Bend, and beyond. Nonetheless, that's only a small portion of what I am charged to do on a daily basis. I have a challenging job, and, believe it or not, I enjoy what I do; I am proud of my work. I am a salaried, university educated, degreed professional serving the people of the State of Texas for almost 25 years. Moreover, I have had a job every day of my life since I was 15 years old. Additionally, I have been an avid fisherman for over 40 years. We were doing our job, Mr. gulftrout. We were diagnosing an unexpected mechanical issue with our boat in order to efficiently complete our monitoring event. We were successful, we solved the problem and conducted our required monitoring on schedule. We could have chosen to waste time and additional resourcesby giving up and calling it a day. We did not. My number one responsibility during our monitoring events is to ensure the safety of the total operation. I have been boating and fishing long enough to know that bad things can happen, in the blink of an eye, if you are not paying attention. Finally, I specifically pulled the boat out of the ramp, and then backed it down closer to the dock so that you would have room to launch. Upon your arrival, you appeared to be acting in a sarcastic, abusive manner. You continued shouting at us, apparently not realizing that we could not hear most of what you were saying. We were doing our jobs; we were trying to resolve mechanical problem in a safe and professional manner. |
I am very thankful for the services of "20Mako".
The rest of this post sounds like a "I am fantastic fisherman" post. Sounds more like an Autobiography. I thought this was going to be a post about fishing NB? I have spent 50 years on the water and yet I have never felt the need to brag about it. |

We took this picture Tuesday afternoon in Nueces Bay. We were both in our own boats and left the dock at about the same time. We had our own little afternoon tournament and I will only say this one thing, "I got beat like I do pretty much every time we fish together! If he had not "Guided" me to the reef that was covered up with theses beauties, I would have ended the day with one lonely 22" trout. As soon as I drifted across his spot, I put four more specks in the box 22"-23 1/2". He also had five trout and had added a couple reds, for good measure. His trout went: 16", 22", 23", 24 1/2" and 29"! He reds went 22" and an oversized one, that he released 30 1/2" long. He went back to exact same spot early the next morning and caught "ZERO" trout. He did catch a fat 26+" red that pushed the scales to 7 lbs.

Here is a picture of my good friend , Richard Bueno with a Nueces Bay beauty. Richard went to Flour Bluff high school along with everyone else in the maintenance department at Marina Del Sol. There is Ruben, the head guy. I do not believe there is anything that Ruben can not do. He seems to have his hand in all types of home building and maintenance. His specialty though, is new AC installation. Then his right hand man is another Richard followed by Gilbert. Gilbert specializes in the plumbing repairs around the condo and I also remember him doing most the tile work there. Then there is "Scotty Scissorhands". Scott handles all the grounds work and I have witnesses his trimming hedges for hours on end. Scotty gave me my favorite collectable fishing reel. It is a Shakespeare Service Reel made in 1956, the year I was born. This reel is unused and in "Mint" condition. Then there is Richard Bueno. Richard pretty much did "ALL" the dirty work. He always did it with a smile on his face and I can honestly say I always enjoyed being around him. I have not worked at Marina Del Sol in many years but I can honestly say, I have a "Good Friend" in everyone one there. From the general manager, Hank and his right hand man, I mean woman Linda, right on down the line to Richard. I only took Richard fishing two times but both trips are very memorable and hard to beat. The first trip was when I caught my Nueces personal best of 9 1/4 lbs. The second trip was during the week around 8 years ago. I guess you could say he snuck away one morning for a quick trip between breakfast and lunch. We went to one of my favorite spots and hammered the trout and reds, catching a quick limit in a couple hours. He made it back to work without anyone knowing where he had been! This picture is for you Richard, you "Always" had that big smile every time I saw you! |

He who shall not be mentioned, that you? Clever rascal.....
Edit. Tyler I am laughing so hard I can't stop. I can not believe what happens when you type certain words. . For those who are wondering type "shark bait " without a space and quotes in a post and see what happens.... _________________ Wish I Were in Baffin |

Here is an unusual catch for me. I never fish for "Bull Drum", but I got an invitation from Captain Tom Buckner one afternoon and was glad I did not turn him down. The action was fast and furious the whole time we fished. Captain Tom knows his stuff whether it's drum in the channel or chasing marlin around the world, "He is one of the best!" Here is "The Captain" and I having a great time!
