I've seen quite a few custom rod holders on kayaks that stick up above the kayak. I notice they utilize the flush mount rod holders for the base. Was wonder what size PVC yall used and if yall could post up some pics of yalls rod holders. Trying to get some ideas of how I'm going to do mine when I get a kayak. Just want to figure out how tall or how low I'm going to make it.

Crack of Dawn... http://codpaddlesports.com/home/ makes a flush mount that 1 1/4 pvc fits snug...

Excellent set up.
The great thing about PVC is that you can be very creative in designing all kids of stuff...and it's cheap.

I used the ol' milk crate. stored anchor, drift sock and such. I had PVC tubes zip tied and angled to the stern. The way I had it all mounted, I had a boat cushion tied to the crate so it also made a back rest. D.

I've been considering using a milk crate for my tackle. I saw a video of a guy who had a sort of tool bag that drapes over it that also has a bag that goes all the way into it to keep stuff from falling out. Thought that might be a good idea as well.

One question I have is how hard is it to quickly grab a rod from a rod holder behind you when you got a fish on?

I'm also really considering adding outriggers to the kayak and using some rod holders I have to be able to raise them up and down or thinking of just mounting a piece of PVC across a section of the stern to be able to remove the outriggers but still have them sturdy.

In my crates I have 4 vertical PVC holders in the corners. I keep two rods, the net, and usually the boga grips in the 4th. Inside the crate is other essential gear, tackle bag, blah blah blah. Love that system because I just keep/prep the crate in my garage, toss it in the bed of my truck while driving, then strap it to the kayak to go fish, toss it in the truck on the way home, then toss into the garage. I don't have to mess with any gear individually.

Rod holders for outriggers don't work, at least the ones I made. PVC across the stern would be better IMHO.

And what JJ said...just throw it in the garage. Wink
