What are your ideas on fishing around porpoises? I've heard a few theories on them. One, that they scare away game fish, and you might as well leave when they show up. And two that you should fish around them because their feeding on baitfish which game fish will find eventually. I've had no luck around them and am curious what everyone else thinks.

Have rarely done much catching around them. Catch fish before they arrive and awhile after they leave. Only one twice have I caught fish with them around and both times they were there but about 40-50 yards from the catching zone.
They are a lot of fun to watch.

I've never had any luck when they are in the area, not even baitfish. When they are around I just sit back and enjoy a cold beverage and wait for them to leave the area, maybe even take a short nap.

Here is a funny little story had rotator cuff surgery and wasn't able to run baits off the beach knowing how much I missed it wife says I will kayak the bait out for you. It was flat so I say OK she gets about 300 yards drops it then on the way back in a big pod of dolphins show up hitting the kayak and swimming around her all the way in I think they were wanting to play she said they were trying to kill her and she is yelling at me once she hits the beach as if I planned it. Lol crazy.[/i]

John TX, it had to be your fault. Very Happy That is funny. Bet it wasn't for her, though.

we had been fishing one night for specks, and during a lull in catching them a porpoise came up right in front of us almost to the piling. he had a huge trout in his mouth and it looked like he was taunting us. i am always amazed at beauty of sea life. last sept our last trip to bob hall we saw a huge swell coming towards the pier as it got closer we realized it was a manta ray trolling for food. my camera had stopped working so i am hopeful of seeing another.this was only the second time in over 10 yrs that i have seen one. we are already counting the months til we can make another trip

Nice! One time in Nueces Bay I was on a school of small specks with a few keepers mixed in. There was a Dolphin that came to the area and I swear it started herding the school of trout toward my boat. The fishing got better and I ended up catching my limit and never moved. They say they are the smartest thing swimming out there, so you never know. That being said, I hate it when they show up to a spot hunting for the same fish I am trying to catch. Smile

I've had pods of them completely shut down a red hot spanish mackerel bite at the jetties.

If they are so smart, how come you never see them driving around in little dolphins cars, talking on their dolphin cell phones??? Rolling Eyes

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of mixing marine mammals and fishermen.

I remember a post here or on extremecoast several years ago where a guy was out in his kayak fishing, and he has a silvery CD dangling below the boat (don't ask me why; he never said). Dolphins showed up and destroyed his kayak. he had pictures, and there were 2 or 3 other people nearby I believe. Anyhow, it was quite a story. He survived; his kayak didn't. The "attack" played out in the Mansfield Cut I believe, or near there.

I have been around them near Aransas Pass in the channel and in various other spots down there and never had a single problem. Dolphins are a lot better fisherman than I so when they are around I really can't tell any difference, they're catching; I watch. But, I am pretty sure the dolphins catch more while they are near me 'cause the fish are so busy laughing, they can sneak up on them.

Probably because they are smart enough to not to want to have to pay the bills.

Well played, Sir. Very well played!! Laughing Laughing

So I guess what you are saying is that ObamaPhones can be issued to dolphins, because we all know that ObamaPhones are free, right?
