While scouting out some fishy areas on Google Earth I noticed boats spinning donuts out in the Bays. What ritual is this and what purpose does it serve? My guess is that it stirs the bottom up and the fish respond to the suspended food.

The ones on google earth probably are shrimpers or oyster boats

In a flats boat, spinning a donut is also a way to get a boat up on plane when the water is too shallow to get up normally. Not exactly the most environmentally friendly way to get out of the flats though.

If you look at the area just off shore of Goose Island SP, Copano Bay you can see a few making these circles. Some of them look like bay boats.
