There is no doubt that Packery is starting to revive the laguna madre after years of high salinity and the ravages of algae blooms. The water color and clarity is much better. In time you will see an increase in all species of fish. I've heard of Jack Crevalle being caught in the ICWW. The PC jetties are not yet fully established but in a very short time they can become as productive as the Port A jetties.

I wouldn't speak too soon concerning algal blooms. There is no reason to believe that as the temps inc. that the brown tide will not show up again. The influence of Packery is most noticeable on the flats right off of the channel, but when the Packery channel meets the ICW, the water flows into the larger channel and is not spread more than a few miles into the laguna. I agree that the water around the channel itself will remain clear most likely, but as for laguna, we may not see the changes we were hoping for.

Guys,

This spot is the big hit! If they keep it open, there will be a lot of tarpon taken off there.

The big thing is this jetty moves more bait into the surf than before, significantly enhancing the beach fishing. Especially during the finger mullet migration. The areas south of the jetty will become a giant kill zone without a 25 mile ride down the beach.

I have loved fishing the mansfield jetties, but hated the drive. There were days when the tarpon where so thick you could see multiple jumps in the same eye span every three or four minutes.

Now we have the action without the drive. This is great for everyone.

Deaver

I am not sure about the factual influence and the exact changes Packery has made but just from the average joe's point of view I can see better water clarity from laguna shores, will it stay that way....who knows? I would say that at a minimum it has helped get better water in here.

Yea I would say there's a bunch more water moving through as little cuts have opened up significantly since Packery. Have also been catching a lot more whiting inshore then before, as well as seeing more porpoise's in the laguna...

Just wait till September and October. Place is going to be one giant kill zone for the bait.

Also hit that bad boy then you have the major June tides and you will see more bait washed through that place than you can imagine. Microwave your brain....won't even be able to walk off the jetty. Make sure you stay at a Holiday Inn the night before.

first, they're dolphins
second, there have always been large numbers of dolphins in laguna

I think I will wait and see what happens before making such blanket statements as to how packery will affect the laguna. Who's to say they will even continue to dredge it and keep it open (i.e. mansfield).

The tax increment zone approved by voters from the get-go will include funds for maintenance. its not gonna silt in, dont worry.

if nothing else the water looks better, like I said earlier I don't have a profound knowledge of the actual effects but the water is beautiful right now to me.

No It was a Jack C not a Dorado or Dolphin as you were refering to. My old man caught it free-lining a finger mullet somewhere just south of Bird Island basin. Pretty sure he knows what a dolphin looks like as old as he is. Things are looking up for the Laguna no doubt.
