To my knowledge there is no PINS surf cam. There is a horace caldwell cam that shows how high the surf is but doesnt mean thats how it will be at PINS. I have taken a 2wdreally silverado past the 30 and could have gone farther. It changes from day to day out there. Sone days a honda civic could make it to the jetties and other days some 4x4s will have trouble right at the entrance. Most of the time you just gotta make a judgement call.

Changes often but the driving since the big blow has not been bad. Just watch for he really soft stuff. You can lower air pressure in your tires and get through some.

I've taken my 2WD F150 to the start of Little Shell before, but it was years ago ...during January I think. The bull tides of Fall were gone and there was enough rain to make the sand hard-packed into the early 20's. But I've also got stuck in the same truck at the 15mm (trying to enter Y-Pass), and also back at around the 10mm or so. How far you can go on 2WD really depends on a number of possibilities. I used to see Oz pass by in a small 2WD truck (Toyota or something), heading out to the 40's. A light weight truck/jeep, with air-downed tires can go pretty far depending on the conditions. If you follow the road (ruts in sand) you can go quite a ways, that is unless someone is parked across the road which forces you to drive into the soft stuff around them which might get you stuck (I've had that happen--thnx a-hole!) Driving off the tracks/ruts can also get your tires damaged by any number of washed up hazardous objects (broken tree limbs, ripped metal pieces, even fish bones/spines).

Just my .02....theres a sign at the 4.5....that reads....4x4 only! Keep this in mind if you go beyond. If someone is blocking the low rode and you dont have a 2wd capable of going around....get over it! Are A-holes suppose to give way to idiots???

My experience is that past the 4 wheel drive sign, if you get struck in a 2x you don't get too many people volunteering to help, if in a 4x4 it's another story.

Beach fees tend to be paid in beer.

I tend to agree but i think that most people that go down there will lend a helping hand if someone really needs it. Most of the time after about 2.5 miles the crowds really start to thin out and you can get more solitude. I know that i personally would help out a 2wd vehicle down island because i used to only have 2wd and would venture past the 4wd sign. I do appreciate when people offer to give something in return, though i usually turn down money.

I usually have my truck down there but for my October trip I was sporting the Odyssey. And of course I had that minivan down about 7 miles.

All depends on the tides and your experience.

The high tides last week have made driving conditions on the beach excellent. You can make it to the 15 with no problems at all even at high tide. You can easily make it length of the beach if you drive at low tide if no one is blocking the low road in big shell. Use common sense, let 1/3 of the air out of your tires and never go down the beach without a shovel and a bucket. They will get you out almost any time you get stuck. If you get in a pinch, most people will stop and at least offer to help. Does not help to have an extra 12 pack or a little cash to offer. Most will not take it and help you just for the good karma. Nah...I didn't mean it like that, Jreb. I got over it, wound up buying a 1988 4x4 Suburban that provided me with quite a few really nice beach trips. But I've seen a couple times where the sand was so cotton-soft at the dune edge that no one would drive there, and there would be a mid-road that was well traveled with packed ruts that stretch for miles. I'd come across an extremely long truck parked perpendicular across the road with equipment and lines blocking the low road (surf line). Only choice was to go around. Sometimes that means driving over foot high seaweed with who-knows-what kinda tire poppers lay beneath.

Then there was the time I lost my 4WD low on the way back. Made it back in 4WD high, but I woulda been sittin on hard times if I had lost the entire 4x4 gears and needed to float over a hundred yards of semi-soft sand to reach manageable ground if there was a vehicle blocking the road.

That being said, I AM an idiot for going past the 4WD sign in my F150 on numerous occasions. Got stuck twice in that truck and was thankful/lucky to have pals from SFCCI and T.O. that helped me out. At those times, the fishing reports were red hot and I got all hell bent to try to get into the action on PINS. Poor decision on my part.

In any case, if you are gonna take your Chevy down the beach, give it a REALLY good wash/rinse when you exit the park. Spend a few bucks to rinse the undercarriage thoroughly. Rust is a sumbiatch. If you plan on making future trips there, look into getting an undercarriage spray job.

Thats alot of good info guys.
I have a 2wd Toyota Tacoma that I am not really sure how far it will make it....or if it will even make it pass the entrance...Smile
I did try it at the Fish Pass jetties.....and believe me...that was a big step for me.
A few years ago...I got stuck at the entrance to the South Packery Channel...!! And I could see small cars parked on the beach and here I am....stuck...tho I must confess...I was driving a Dodge Ram truck at the time.... Shocked
But I do plan to take my Tacoma to Pins very soon...but knowing me...I will wait at the entrance and follow somebody in.... Laughing
