So I'm thinking of purchasing a surf rod set up. Any ideas on what rod would be a good starter? Dont really want to spend an arm and a leg on my first rig. If I do really get into it, then I would certainly invest in nicer ones. I plan on putting a 7000I on the rod I purchase. Thanks in Advance!

My immediate reaction is to say a Breakaway LDX.
It is a bit on the pricier side but the upnote is that you wouldn't have to buy another rod if you found surf fishing to your liking.

If I lived closer, I have a 12' Ugly Stick that I would just GIVE you.
I haven't used it since switching Breakaway.

Good luck in your search.

Financially speaking, one mans arm is another mans fingernail. What is your specific budget?

Really don't want to go over 100. If I could find one under 80 would be great!

Hurricane Black Beauty 2 12ft - Its a fast action...$35

Penn Pursuit 8000 orSalt Striker 80...$45-$60

Have taken reels to surf and offshore and no problems. I am cheap, but it works.

I'm partial to salt strikers. Good rod for not much of a price.

I like to keep a ceiling on the rods and reels that I buy that way I can can buy a new one every so often and pass along my used gear to my kids or a friend. If I pay alot for something then I might want to hold on to it. I like buying new fishing equipment. I also like buying tools but I'm slowly getting away from that I may buy one more welding machine but not right now. Very Happy

Lol. My wife says I have to build a bigger garage before I buy more tools.

As for surf rods the Tsunami 10 foot rods are my favorite. Ultra light with a fast tip for really whipping them out there.

I've had a lot of different surf rods, Breakaway, Tsunami, AR, Salt Striker, some others I can't remember... but my Tica rods are always my favorite.
