I often use a san diego jam knot with 30 lb mono or 20 lb Flouro depending on the species I'm targeting. It's strong and easy to tie and is shown with a variety of knots on this site: http://www.netknots.com/fishing_knots/

There's more than one type of good knot out there so learn them well. Often the fishermans knowledge of knots is more important to landing the fish than the type of lure used.

I can't take credit for finding it, someone else posted it on here a while ago. It just helped me learn a couple new knots so I spread the knowledge around. Cool

If you fish light tackle with me in the surf you won't ever lose a lure or have to worry about you knot slipping. Very Happy

I have two top water rods.

1 is an 9' Medium action with a Shimano Sahara 4000 filled with 30 lb braid. I tie a 20 lb floro leader on it, and tie it to a Super Spook with a Rapala Knot.

I have a 7' Medium Action with a Shimano Sahara 3000 filled with 30 lb braid with a 20 lb floro leader on it, and a Small skiltter walk tied with a rapala knot.

The loop lets the lure swim better than a regular uni-/clinch knot.

For spoons, I use a small spro swivel with a trace of 40 lb single strand connected via haywire twist...and then the aforemetioned floro leader to braid.

tie on a floro leader, the knot you had slipped due to the braid stright to the lure...

use a albright knot to combine your braid to floro...

then use this knot for a "loop knot" to your topwater or soft plastic, easy and fast to tie, won't slip...

My go to knots are the San Diego jam and rapal knot. For live bait I use San Diego jam and for lures I use rapala knot. I even use the rapala knot Offshore when jigging.
