Hey Dave, you may find this interesting too. This one is from some of the local boys here at TAMUCC.

Thanks for the references. I would be very interested in the results of the Kahle Hook study if it is ever conducted--have used them for years and can remember only one deep hooked trout and no reds.

Thanks Luke. I'll dig further into it when I have more sittin' time................... it looks like a freaking semi manual!!!! Embarassed Just on a quick glance I noticed Kahle, J and treble hooks studied, but no circle.

On the circle hook thingy; I've used them down there under a Cajun Thunder with live shrimp, fishing on the KRS and other places. The hook up rate was at least as good as ( close to 100%) anytime I've used the old treble hook method by just beginning to reel when the cork went down, and ALL fish were hooked in the corner of the mouth. Cool Wink

Seeing that I caught scads of fish that were 1/16" - 1/8" undersize, that's a good thing!!!! Very Happy

speaking of hooks....what are y'alls preferences for size? also, how does an "octopus" compare to a circle? does the offset eye help or hinder?

The offset versions cause more gut hooking than the alternative, and are illegal in lots of offshore tournaments. I've used both and prefer the non offset for the first reason given. This has all been covered before, but the main problem with circle hooks is the end user, not the hook! Macho types who refuse to drop the "eye crossing" hook set will miss more fish than they hook!!! Wink

I have been fishing using circle hooks for quite a long time now and what I find interesting is watching the people observing my rod going crazy in its rod holder with a fish on. Right away those folks want to grab my rod to catch the fish. I tell them if the fish bit the hook properly, he already caught himself and now all I have to do is reel him in. I'm very patient and they are all excited....funny!!

Yes, and there in lies the secret to circle hooks, and the problem with the "cross their eyes" crowd...................... one literally is better off doing NOTHING than adding to the chaos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've caught more reds than I can remember down in Destin using circle hooks and small live pinfish, and I never do ANYTHING until the rod tip is well laded and then just start reeling, including the 42+ incher that I caught a few years back! Very Happy Cool Wink
