Went to the port A jetties because of the not-so-promising reports of murky water and lots of surfers at packers. Soaked my first shrimp of the day and get a nice mangrove from the rocks. After that it slowed down and we kept losing tackle without getting bites. We were only fishing the channel side because the surf as completely weeded out and had 5-6 foot rolling breakers. Tide was going out, wind was pushing against the tide.

We switched to floats with long leaders to keep our bait from getting hung up, but kept fishing just a few feet from rocks. I stopped soaking shrimp to throw a gotcha plug at some busting bait.

As I was doing this my buddy Matt (first time fishing the Port A jetty) sees his float take off down the jetty. He calls my name and I look down the rocks to see a big fish shoot straight out of the water. I immediately yell to him "king or smack?" To which he replies "Tarpon!". I said "Tarpon??!!" and he goes...well...I think so but I could be wrong (he didn't want to be that guy who calls tarpon when its just a big ladyfish).

Turns out it was a 30-35 inch tarpon. He jumped it 4 times. Got it to the rocks, and the tiny itty bitty 2/0 circle hook pulled from his upper lip as we tried to pull it to the rocks. We had the leader, so by IFGA rules, its a successful release Wink

It was Matts first tarpon, caught on a dead shrimp he had casted out 3 times before, less than 15 feet from the rock he was standing on, on 12 lb mono. Congrats too him.

As we were leaving there was a feeding frenzy on both sides of the jetty down towards the end, but we didn't have the energy to walk all the way down, and we had places to be (the Gaff lol).

Cool deal Luke. Be careful over there and whatever you do, never go over to St. Joe and have a really good day. The likelyhood of you being even remotely the same afterwards in numerical terms is zero. Cool
That's all.
