We bought a truck camper a few months ago and after a couple of test trips to the Frio River we decided we were ready to take it to pins earlier this week. The wind was blowing at least 25 mph when we got there on Monday. We tried a few spots on the way down to about 16-17 about the beginning of the high bank area where we spent the night. There were three rows of breakers 3-4 ft. The current was strong and there was too much seaweed to hold baits very long that evening. We didnt have any luck with lures either. So we mostly just kicked back and enjoyed the beach and sunset, etc.

When we got up Tuesday morning the wind was much lighter and minimal seaweed in the water so we were able to put out the longlines. We caught a lot of small whiting on fish bites and kept several of the larger ones for a fish fry. No bait in the water to speak of. Tried cut bait but only caught hardheads and a small bonnet head shark.

The camper worked great and predictions that we would be sucked down to our axels gratefully proved false - at least this for this trip. The newer lighter truck campers seem to be a ideal way to camp on Pins if you have a good truck and some experience driving on the sand. I was extra careful about where I drove on the beach and especially where I stopped. I didn't feel that the camper changed the handling of my truck much at all. The hot shower, comfortable bed and air conditioning were amazing experiences after primitive camping in the past on the beach.

Like the others, I was not able to see anything.

What kind of camper did you get? Was the genny a built in?

As a fellow truck camper enthesitis I am very courious about your set up.

Not being able to see the pictures is killing everyone.

It is the best way to camp.

Sounds like you have a nice set up. Have you looked at rv.net? It is a RV site and has a truck camper section. There is some good information on it. Take a look.

There is a sticker by the back door that gives the weight of your camper. It usually includes a full tank of water and propane bottles full.

Many folks in California and Arizona are quite fond of their Lance campers. Saw many of these campers years ago down around the Sea of Cortez and they seemed to be a quality product. Have fun with your new rig!

I only drove a short ways into the high banks area with the camper. It wasn't a problem driving what I will call the middle road for a short distance in the high banks. I would like to drive all the way to the Mansfield jetties with the right conditions. As I get more experience with the camper driving farther south I will post my experiences.
