I know two posts in a row. I am looking for some advice for finding sharks without 4WD or a boat. I have caught just about everything down there but never really tried for shark. My dad used to try for shark (half heartedly). He would throw out a line because the kid (me) eanted to catch one. Now my kids want to try to catch one.
I wasn't sure to try the surf at night or Bob Hall or other areas.
Also, any good bait and rigging ideas would be so helpful.
I am not asking for anyone to post honey holes just newbie generic stuff.

try in the 3rd gut or so off the beach.... if you can get some skipjack, that's a pretty good bait. cut horse mullet works OK too, and is pretty easy to get.

are you in san antonio or corpus?

match the hatch...hit the beach, swim a line out to the 2nd gut (backside, right before the 3rd bar) drop it and haul booty back to shore, tighten line and wait...

get some stingray from Bait Bucket and cast net some horse mullet, don't forget fresh dead shrimp for whiting, use the whiting either in chunks or whole.

i used to swim/walk a rod to the furthest sandbar i could get to and throw my bait into the gut for sharks(have used a surf board too), i was doing this one day and had a 7foot shark come within 10feet of me, i think we both scared each other, i smashed my rod and bait in the water between us with the reel in free spool, hauling butt backwards(it was the third bloody chunk of bonito i had taken out there)
i would get a frenzy and yak the baits out, Bob hall may be a good place to start...i have seen plenty of sharks up to 350pounds(and a 200pound ray) caught on cast outs...if you don't want to get a yak (kayaks are not shark proof though either)..i had a big tiger shark try and flip my frenzy to get the bloody bonito i had on the back this was in the middle of the night

you could also go to bob hall with some really fresh dead shrimp and squid and try for bonnet heads. they are small and can be caught on smaller tackle. take a pier net with you and you will be set. you can also use your basic leaders as well on them since they arent big sharks.

The Jetties at Packery or Port A will also allow you to get far enough out however I'm not sure you will want to be landing a shark on the rocks with young boys (even though that was commonplace 'back in the day')

do you have a surf rod, or heavy boat rod?

My daughter is 11 and son is 15 so they are pretty good at taking care of themselves even though I was on the Jerry's at 6-7. It's amazing we lived.
I have a heavy boat rod also but not a big surf rod.
