Had a slow day at work Friday, so I decided to make a quick trip to the the Surf. Left Carrizo Springs at 8 am and headed straight to Roy's to get a new line one my Sealine 9000 (750 braid and 250 mono top shot). Also bought some leader material while there, figuring my 3 leaders were not going to be enough. Picked up my little bro at his house and we headed down to the water.
We only drove about 12 miles down and the spot looked right so we made camp and tried for some bait while we waited for the rest of our party. It got to sundown and the other guys had not yet arrived, so I deployed a frozen bonita and fresh mullet. Dropped the Bonita at about 400yrd and the mullet at about 700. Made it back to shore and the waiting started.
At 10, the rest of the crew made it (other bro, his girl and a coworker of his) and we debated how to get his baits out. I am a rookie on the yak and had never attempted a night deployment, what made it worse, I am the most experienced runner in my group Confused My bro said he would run the bait, but that did not sit well with me, so I just grabbed my vest and headed out. I made it to 500yrd and it was surprisingly easy. Through out the night, we had multiple short false runs and at 3 am, my bros reel started singing. I pulled it out of the holder and held it till he arrived. He grabbed it tightened down the drag and set the hook, popping his line Sad
There must have been a weak point we did not notice. He brought in his line, while I checked my other 2 baits. Baitless on both the bonita and mullet. Grabbed a couple more mullet to bait up while he tied on my remaining leader.
I decided to make 2 runs, as I did not want to risk tangling up three lines and headed out with my 5/0 and dropped it off right before the breaker. Came back in and grabbed the two 9/0 and headed out into the blue. Dropped one bait infront of camp at about 550 and then turned northeast and paddled another 200yrds out to drop of my other bait.
No takes the rest of the night nor the following morning. At about 12 we started getting runs only to tighten down and break off. Something in the water was cutting our lines as neatly as a razor. Luckily I had bought the materials and we started making our leaders there on the beach. Redeployed the baits (skipjack, sand trout and mullet) and saw shark on every run. Yielded to a 6'bull that passed within inches of my kayak and passed over numerous blacktips in the 4-6' range. Heck, I even tried to handline a 5.5' hammer that circled me with one of the baits.
20 minutes after I got back in, I had a monstrous run of my 9000 and set the hook, only to lose my leader again Evil or Very Mad Reeled in my line to check the damage and saw that the knot, that I had personaly tied, slipped Embarassed As I was rerigging, my 5/0 goes slack and I run to it and start trying to catch up with the fish. 100yrds later I feel him and start preparing to set the hook, only to have him drop the bait. I reeled in that line as well and rebaited and headed back out. Dropped my 5/0 right before the final breaker and headed out with my Sealine. I dropped of at about 650 and headed back in.
75 yrds from the breaker I looked to my right and glimpsed a dorsal. I did a double take and kept my eyes on the same spot and saw that fin again. However this time it kept coming out of the water and finally stopped when it was eye-level with me. Then the wave started to fall and I saw it's tail sticking out about 4' from the surface. On the next wave the fish disappered. Shocked It was maybe 40' from me and I know i could have fit my 10' kayak between it dorsal and tail. What kind of shark was it? I have no idea, but it had a long tail, rather slim dorsal and was a dark grey color. Oh yea, I made it over the breakers and back to shore in about 30 seconds after that sighting Laughing
All in all, we lost 5 good fish due to cut lines, and 1 due to my knot tying skills Rolling Eyes Fish are there, got the gear, understand the technique, now I just need things to click (pun intended, lol). Once that does, I may finally land my first land based shark bigger than me.
Here's hoping, Tight lines Y'all

Weeds were few and far between Friday thru Sat at 2pm. After that, a huge mat came in and we were not able to keep the lines out for any amount of time.

Look for us and stop by for a chat. We should be hitting the Surf every other week.

Hicksroots07...tftr??? What it mean, lol
