jeepforum.com is a good place to do research. I had a 90 4 cylinder for 16 years, just stock, & it *loved* the beach. I never got stuck once & got into deep sand pretty much every time I went.
Maybe it's just me, but I have yet to drive a Jeep that's "slow" (& my first cars were British Leyland/ Austin Healey, & Toyota Supras. Not slow. Then a Toy SR54WD that I just "had" to have. THAT was SLOOOOW but I adored it.)

Because of the "death wobble" thing (that I'd never even heard of until I was looking into the Unlimiteds- which I have now. It's not "slow" either), I'd never consider a lifted Jeep. But that's just me.

In 16 years (once the clutch was replaced @ 9800 miles, defective), I replaced belts & hoses, a water pump, & the tires. And there were recalls for a brake line & the catalytic converter. Neither needed) I sold it because it didn't have AC & had bought another SUV so it was sitting, wasted. I'm still regretting it, 8 years later. I did have the transfer case stuff changed out religiously because of the sand. If you get a good one, you just can't beat 'em on the beach.

The jeep is sexy but I drove it and took forever to get up to 60 and then I could not get it to do over 67.5 mph with most of it at 3000rpm. It would cruise along at 62 or so at 2600 rpm. It would be okay for going to the beach and back but I will have to buy it cheap at that because it is really a toy and maybe I can live with that but I am still mulling it over.

Id look for one with the in-line six or even the older v8 model. Seems way underpowered, maybe cant push those bigger tires, they wiegh alot.

That looks amazing, and with a hard top. I would go for it. You can swap a 4.0L fairly easily and cheap as well. Relocate the motor mounts and grab and adapter for the transmission, and wallaw!... got yourself a sport.

Take the doors off and go! And Jeepforum is a great place. I'm always on it. If there is every a question, it'll get answered. Also, you can get a c-clip eliminator kit for the axle. Upgrade to a Super 35 and it'll have the strenght (or damn near) of a D44. I encourage everyone to buy a Jeep. And the TJ's ride great. 4 wheel coil. I run leafs and it's brutal. But it's worth it.

How easily and how cheaply could that be done? It's an automatic.

This is a write up with photos on how it was done. I have seen guys pick up 4.0l motors for 200 $ with transmission. The auto isn't bad by the way. I used to have a 2000 Sport tricked out with tube fenders front and rear, rock sliders, tub armor and lifted. It had the NV3550 trans. I loved it. Bulletproof trans. But the auto is also amazing. I currently run a 93' YJ Wrangler with a 4.0l and 32RH 3 speed auto with 3.07 gears, 4" lift and 33x12.50s. Runs fantastic.

The job is simple, but time consuming. Here are some parts you will need. Of course you can pick and choose between new and used. I see good used parts on craigslist all the time. Sometimes for next to nothing. I just copied and pasted this from the list. Easier than typing it out.


motor (duh) try to stay with your year group (the year of your jeep), 97-99 and 00+ although my swap is from a YJ
*trans, the AX-5 will not bolt to the 4.0 plus it will not hold the
power either ( i dunno about autos)
*t/c the 4cyl has less splines then the 6cyl so it wont work either
*computer, must be year/motor/trans/model specific
*harness (for most its plug and play, for some reason mine was not) XJ harness will not work, this is where year specific comes in play the most
*Upper left motor mount 52058865 (dealer part) (welds to frame, is what mounts bolt to)
*Upper right motor mount 52058864 (dealer part)(welds to frame, is what mounts bolt to)
*Reinforcement left motor mount 52058845 (i am making these though)
(dealer part)
*Reinforcement right motor mount 52058846 (i am making these though)
(dealer part)
*Exhaust need re done from header to cat (the cat is same and so is rest of exhaust)
*Drive shafts (front is now longer, rear is now shorter, doing a belly up is good idea at this time)
*Fuel lines from frame to fuel rail, you may be able to make the 4cyl ones
work, but mine didn't have enough play in them, $50~ from dealer part # is
52100272AH
*wiring diagram (you may or may not need it but still nice) http://www.ahdol.com/
*Vacuum lines the goto intake manifold, dealer only parts, 53030615 (valve
cover to intake tube), 4854265 (valve cover to intake manifold) and 4854163
(evap canister lines) all rang in at <$30 from dealer so no to bad, although yours may be different this is what worked for me
*Power steering lines, the 4cyl ones are longer, they will work but you risk them getting into the belt/fan, KOI has the pressure line at $15 but they do not have the return (they show it as bulk hose, the bulk hose works from the reservoir to pump but you need line with fitting from box to reservoir) advanced has the return for $25~ both were next day items
*Radiator hoses (upper and lower)
*Intake tube, the filter box fits but the tube is different, I found someone who did a CAI and bought theirs. Or you may do a CAI. I chose not to for i play in mud and the filter clog up to easy when open like a CAI filter is.
*Fan shroud, you may trim the one from the 4cyl


I hope this helps. It looks like a lot of stuff, but it's really not. In case you can't tell. I love Jeeps.

haha, Well... the 2.5l is still a potent motor. You can always regear to 4.88's. It'll put you in the proper powerband being that you run 33's. It'll give you a stock feel for acceleration and highway travel. Your mileage might improve as well.

That's what I hear. About 1200 dollars though right? I took it to my tranny guy. He recommended regearing after driving it and he also said there is a vibration in the rear end from the pinion angle being off or something like that. He said that garages that install lifts could probably shim it to get the correct angle. Vibration is not good for trannies he said.

The angle can be fixed by doing a transfer case drop. Drops the transmission and transer case down to compensate for the angles. It's worse for the U-joints more than anything. But the re-gear is worth the money. It'll drive easier. I believe you should have no more than a 2 degree difference in total driveline angles. Also, with that lift, a slip yoke eliminator is essential.

It sure *looks* well cared for. If your (or your wife's) knees are grumbly, an automatic is a real plus. I have yet Sad to discover if there's a difference in sand.
There are 2 downsides to Jeeps, imho: space for your paraphernalia/ entourage & they are pretty tiring on the highway, long(er) distance. Cruise control fixes that. Or maybe lack of AC was in play.
The best thing about them is that they are sports car (well, almost- convertible, anyway) & 4WD, so satisfy all mid-life urges at once + utilitarian.
LOL re Liam. You better believe it.

Is there a soft top also?
