The other thread about ice reminded me....

How do you guys keep stuff cold when you're on PINS for a week?? That was our biggest issue last year. We did get some dry ice but it cost us a fortune and still melted fast. We must be doing something wrong. We have a giant cooler and then 2 smaller rolling coolers.

Keep in mind, we're driving from DFW and making a stop in Kerrville to drop our daughter off at camp and staying there overnight. Whatever we bring from home is going to have to sit in the truck overnight.

Don't open the coolers that have the reserve ice and keep them in the shade. Keep one for stuff that routinely needs to be open for drinks etc. Others freeze 3 liter jugs full of drinking water so you can consume it when it melts.

Pre chill everything including the ice chest before you load it.

keep the plugged pulled (water drained) and keep the ice chest in the shade. Have 1 with ice only and try not to open the lid that much

Prechill and 3-liters of water...we don't do that, thanks!! We'll start saving our jugs and bottles.

Now, where do we buy the dry ice? Last year we bought it at HEB that was near a Whataburger, I think. I believe it was the farthest one South. It was $10 per lb. Is that about right??

Not saying this is you, but just in case: make sure that your coolers are any color as long as it's WHITE !!!!!

I can't justify the price for a Yetty cooler yet, but the Igloo fishing boxes (you know, the long, white suckers) have served me well, and although more expensive than some other POS brands, you get what you pay for.

Like Tyler said, keep the lid closed as much as possible, and I weather stripped mine which helped a butt load as far as keeping the cool in, the heat out and making ice last longer. Shock, shock.................... Yetty's come with a weather strip.........................

Party Barn, HEB in the bluff both have dry ice. I think it's less than $10 per lb.

I have done three camping trips or more to Baja for up to 8 days with only two large ice chests. We get block ice in San Diego duct tape the ice reservoir chests shut until we need them.

It also helps if you don't drink beer! Preferably red wine if you must since it doesn't need to be chilled Smile

We call our friend, Tom Finch, the Ice Nazi but we always have enough. Very Happy

I make my own block ice. Save money and last longer. I found some rubber maid / plastic boxes about the size of block ice. I fill with water and freeze. They are taken out of the ice mold and put into HEB / Hill Country storage bags with twist ties. Ice blocks last a long time, keep freezer cold and works good for cooling bait down un the summer. I normally have 20 ice blocks in the freezer.

Good tip about freezing 3 litters. We freeze milk jugs.Dont drink the water but keep them in our cooler to keep it cool. I will also freeze all the water/gatorade thats going in the cooler and whatever meat im taking as well. Having a good ice chest definately is a must as well.

Wow! Thanks for all the great tips!

We just picked up 4 additional coolers. They aren't the super cheap ones but not the best either. We'll weather strip them and keep them duct taped as well. We figure we'll fill 2 with just ice, jugs, blocks, etc and then one for food and one for whatever we'll drink and eat that day. We won't open the ice ones but once a day. Guess we'll start freezing bottles, jugs and blocks of ice!

Thanks again! 35 more days!

Block ice and let be duct tape be your friend. Back in the day when I was fishing the island & jetties, I never thought of Tyler's suggestion on not drinking beer. It would be easier today, just like a fine red wine, mellow with age. Oh well, salute to the days of the real Lone Star Beer!

HEB in San Antonio sells the dry ice for $1.20 a lb. if you decide to do the dry ice thing.

There is a really big difference between ice that is just below freezing and ice that has been chilling in a deep freeze for a while. If you buy ice that is already on the verge of melting, there isn't really anything you can do to save it, other than dry ice or refrigeration.

I buy a few sacks at the gas stations where it is cheap and then stick them in my deep freeze and use as needed. Night and day in terms of melt at the end of a day. I assume the same thing applies long term as well.
