If one was to jig for red snapper with snapper slappers inside of state waters the standard hooks that come on the jigs are fine. If you travel into federal waters you must convert them to circle hooks. I think this is correct but need correcting if im wrong.
Thanks for the help. _________________ Be polite to everyone but be ready to kill them in a moments notice. |

| For some odd reason, I have had a tough time finding 2/0 red circles. Am I the only one? |

You only have to use circles if using natural bait. Adios

And red ain't red for very far under water, as in a few feet at times. For deep water fishing, using red hooks is no different than using dark brown, dark green or black. _________________ Dave

I forgot about the natural bait thing. Does it matter if you are in state or federal waters.I have never went out looking for red hooks. Is there something special about a red hook.
On a side note while trolling for king fish there is no hook restriction right?
I have never seen a kingfish leader with circle hooks. I know these are some stupid questions but I only recently started fishing offshore. _________________ Be polite to everyone but be ready to kill them in a moments notice. |

Don't know about the state or federal circle hook laws. I guess I never thought about it. I just use circle hooks all the time while snapper fishing. The federal law has got me conditioned that way I recon.
But, there are no hook restrictions on kingfish. Treble is the way to go. But releasing a kingfish alive is tougher with a treble than circle or straight hook. That may be why some people use circles for kingfish inshore. Or billfish offshore for that matter... If you're fishing for kingfish, use treble hook leaders for a better chance of landing one. Make sure you have extras too and be careful. Some folks don't like using treble hooks for kingfish in the kayak because they are so dangerous when a pissed off Kingfish is thrashing his head. Those dern teeth are bad enough. Whatever happens, don't get yourself in any big hurry while landing your first 100 or so kingfish. Safety is a huge reason why a lot of folks do weird stuff, both to make it safer or unsafer trying to cut corners due to laziness. You'll eventually have your own way of doing things... _________________ Fish hard. You never know when you'll make you last trip south. |
