My old Hobie Outback SUV developed cracks from the threaded holes use to lock down the drive system. Took pictures and sent them with the recipt to Seaworthy Marine in Fulton and they forwarded them to Hobie. Hobie came back and said that as long as you have had that kayak for 6 years here is what we will do. Sell you a new hull 2011 Revoulution 13 for 325 plus 175 shipping or a new 2012 Outback hull for 200 dollars more. I would have to keep my old drive and seat and paddle, sounded like a good deal to me so I jumped at it and here it is ready for a maiden voyage. The outriggers were from my old kayak and I just switched them over.
Put in by BHP and trolled around trying to catch a nice king or 2. Nothing much happening, caught 3 small sharks and got tired of that so I decide to troll out to the stand pipe (or whatever that new rig is called). Saw a lot of bait being busted by skippies and little tunys, may have been a few jacks there also. I didnt catch anything trolling out there so I decided to put a egg weight on in front of the king rig and drop it to the bottom and see what would hit it. Dropped it down and then started to reel it up off the bottom and something hit it hard. OMG what did I hook into, I couldnt bring in the line and then the drag took off. I fought this for about 15 minutes and then I was able to get a glimps of it as a silver flash and I thought to myself, Ive hooked into a big shark. I keep fighting and it keeps taking out more drag this went on for I dont know how long time just sort lost its meaning. But one thing was certain I was either going to loose it or one of us was going to get wore out. I finally was able to get it close to the surface and get a look at it OMG a Cobia (I thought to my self great nows about the time the line breaks) It headed for the deep again. Fight fight fight oops the reel felt funny looked down and the reel seat on both ends broke off ( i didnt have it bolted to the rod either but that will definitely change) So here i am trying to hold the reel to the rod and hold the rod and reel in with the other hand, very interesting situation. I finally managed to tire it out and it came up to the kayak and I was thinking now how do I do this, I didnt have a net with me or a gaff so I reached down and start to put my hand in it gill to lift it into the kayak. It gave a flip and dove again, by this time the reels laying in the bottom of the kayak so i grabbed the line and manhandled it back up to the kayak and got my hand into the gills and then felt the line go slack, I look and the line had broke, I hurried up and grabbed the steel leader and wrapped it around my hand and using both hands managed to get it into the kayak with it head in my lap and then the hook fell out of its mouth. I just sat there for about 5 minutes staring at it and trying to figure what to do with it, finally I scooted forward and opened the front hatch and shoved it in there and then decide enough was enough and headed back to the beach. It measured 49 1/2 inches long and on my berkly digital scale it showed 30 lbs even. This is the first Cobia I have ever caught and a very nice way to break in my new kayak.
I drove over to fishingladies house to show her and she went into her garage and came out with a small gaff with the price tag on it and a fishbag that she said she never uses and gave them to me. So she will be given 4 of the best pieces of fillets. Thank you very much fishinglady. _________________ Fishing and Kayaking its a rough life but somebody has to do it.

| Rabbit, that is one hardcore bada$$ report. You are a bolder man to grab the steel leader with a 50 inch cobia on the other end! Awesome stuff right there, and a great looking kayak! |

Great effort Paul. That story reminds me of the real life adventure stories readers would send in to Outdoor Life magazine that I used to read when I was a kid. _________________ E Pluribus Unum |

Wow Rabbit, that's a great Ling! And with all the hyjinx you had to deal with, I think you were supposed to catch that fish. I'm impressed.
That was a brave call grabbing the leader like that... Ling can be really powerful fish and can wake up on you when you think they're finished.
Maybe this is a sign that they're showing up on the close rigs again... I'll be looking for them tomorrow. |
