I will be taking my wife and 5 year old boy to Port Aransas for spring break March 11-14th. I plan on doing some fishing while we are there.

Would I have better luck wading the bay or fishing the jetties?

What can I expect to catch this time of year?
I mostly bass fish so I was wondering what kind of set up will be needed for jetty fishing? What type of rod will I need? Will any of my fresh water rod and reels be effective for jetty fishing? I have mostly 7 foot rods from medium to heavy flipping sticks. What would you guys recomend?

Artificial bait would be my preference but if live bait is what they want then thats what they will get.

Thank for any advice you can offer as I am definately a green pea around the salt water.

Monte Coon

Most of you bass fishing stuff will work for Specks and Jacks around the rocks. Fish the structure the same way realizing that the rocks keep what they catch everytime.

Add on a 12" braided leader so if the spainish mackeral are out there, they don't cut you off.

Never ever grab any salt water fish the way you "lip" a bass. Most have teeth, and lots of them.

Bottom fishing is like you'd set-up for bottom fishing on the down side of a dam, where the bottom is covered in big rocks.

Circle weights and hooks - 5 or 6 oz. Cast out as far as possibile, reel in as fast as possible.

Do a search for lemon rig - that is the way to cork fish the jetties with live bait.

Thanks Big John.

What do you mean by reel in as fast as you can? Are you saying to present the bait in that fashion or after you get a fish on to get it in asap?

We are staying on 11th st so I will be close to the South Jetty is that the place to go or should I head to another location. I don't mind driving if there is a better spot.

What Big John means by reeling in fast, is to reel in your line fast or else, you will get snag on the rocks/granite. Amost 100% garranteed if u don't.

Good luck and good fishing. Very Happy

You can also use your bass tackle to catch redfish and trout in the flats.

Texas rig a Bass Assassin, worm, or senko and work the grass just like your working hydrilla. Or work them weedless and weightless just like in freshwater. Carolina rig will work too but shorten the leader to about 8". Shallow running crankbaits (1'-2' max) and rattletraps will nail them too just have to keep them up above the grass. They will also work well in teh channels and cuts. Spinnerbaits!!! Just be ready to throw it away though if a big redfish hits it. He will bend it all to heck. All of your topwaters will work too.

For soft plastic colors ... red/white, Chartreuse, watermelon/red, pumpkin/chart, salt/pepper

For plugs .... BONE, chrome/blue, chrome/black, green/silver, gold/black

Where to go???

Well, you can catch some fish wading the channels on both sides of Hwy 361 in between AP and PortA. That is the Aransas Shrimpboat Channel and the Sailboat Channel next to Brown and Root Flats. There is some good fishing to be had for the wader on Stedman's Reef and Flats which are the right hand side of hwy 361 as you leave AP and go over the ICW. Also on the backside of Brown&Root Flats can be good. As you approach the ferry line from AP, there is a dirt road on the right just before the rig builder's fence. Take that road to drive around to the back of B&R.

You can wade off the backside of the island down towards CC/Padre from the state park to Packery. I think you can get to some good wading areas near Shamrock off Wilson's Cut which is across the road from the condos mid way down the island on hwy361. Someone else will have to verify that for me.

Load up some of your bass gear and walk the flats. Work your lures pretty much the same way you would bass fishing. If you not getting any strikes then speed it up a bit. I know most bass fishing is very slow as the bass won't travel far to strike. In the salt with exception to cold months, you need to speed it up to trigger the strike. The salt species are used to making a run to catch their prey. I think you will be surprised what you catch using your bass lures.

Exactly.

Searching the old post for lemon rigs will certainly bring up our very detailed jetty fishing threads.

Tight lines!

once you're on the island, you're not gonna want to cross the ferries till you leave(2+ hr wait) ask around about Charlie's Pasture(Port St behind the 7-11 at the ferry landing, you can try the channel there. also a small pier that has lights at night. the surf should have whiting and such easily caught on dead shrimp, expect big crowds this week. down the island at Mustang state park(about 15 mi) are some flats on the west side of the hi-way. (fish pass) 2wd accessible usually. also check out Woodie's marina. the converted ferry(Island Queen) has 4 hr tripsabout $25. sometimes they do OK. if you go out on the jetty, take some dead shrimp and work the rocks(ask more questions)spoons will catch Spanish macks if their close in. this will be a learning trip, most folks will help with advice. also rinse your equip w/ fresh water after fishing.

Great advise. Stay away from the ferries unless it is very early. The 2 hr. wait going from PA to AP is a conservative estimate after 8/9 a.m. during Spring Break. While it may seem ridiculous, the drive back through Corpus and Portland and then to AP will be about 1.5 hrs with traffic. On normal traffic days I make it in less than an hour (I love those speed limits through Corpus and I certainly make use of them).

The first jack you catch is always fun, but (I'm probably in the minority on this) if I think I've got a big jack on, I'll cut the line because it takes too long to land one on light tackle (and you can't eat them). This is time taken away from fishing for smacks, reds or trout.

Your Bass Assassins will work great and for about $10, get some Texas Trout Killers or Red Killers (soft plastics) plus some 1/4 or 1/8 oz. jig heads.

Great info guys!!! I had no idea it would take that long to ride the ferry.
I guess that is to be expected with so many people in such a small area.

As far as the Jack's if the fight is on then I am in for the long haul. I don't plan on bringing any fish back any way. I will be releasing them or giving them away if I get lucky enough to catch one.

Thanks again for all the help. Once again the fishing community comes thru to help a fellow angler with some great advice.

If yall ever head up to the DFW area I will be glad to return the favor.

it may be quicker to drive thru CC and head out SPID and turn north up 361 to Port A. the college kids will be down in force and expect long delays to use the ferry.

pound for pound , Jacks are in my oppinion the hardest fighting fish , they are an absolute blast to catch . If your like me and just enjoy the fight but rarely keep fish to eat , you will have more fun with this fish than any other ...

I keep seeing reference to a place called PINS. What does that stand for?
Is it close to Port Aransas?
