Can someone give me the rundown on what I can find in the surf this time of year, and just each season in general (with respect to spawning, "runs", etc)? I guess more to the point...i know anything is possible, but what types of fish are most prevalent at each season?

Right now you can realistically expect sheepshead, Spanish mackerel, whiting, jacks, pompano, sharks, king fish, red fish, blue fish, I heard trout were moving in... right now with the Mullet migration just starting the surf will be going off.

Noticed the poster was in Houston. Today at the Freeport jetty the sheepshead were coming in with a massive mullet run. Saw a few specs but water is very stained up to San Luis Pass as a result of Brazos River runoff(flooding upriver).
Hopefully water will clear up and temps are going up(about 72 degrees right now). Greener water will bring trout and hopefully the Spring black drum run.
Looking forward to PINS action in May and really need some pompano!

Hi mickeyd, thanks for the report! We will be staying in a beach house less than a mile from the surfside jetty, so that's where I will be fishing.

How was the sargassum??

LIttle grass but much debri all the way to San Luis Pass. Water at Surfside today better than over at Quintana. Very chocolate but lots of mullet in the surf.
Winds were supposed to come in from the North this week at midweek but now forecast is changing. We need a good North wind to clear some of this water up but I do not know when that will happen. I am going backout to access roads 4/5 on Wednesday or so. Hope to pick up some reds or black drum.
Good luck. I will post some pics of the conditions when I get back.

You might want to check the forums at 2 Cool Fishing for up to date reports on Freeport/Surfside area as more people on that forum are from that area. Look at both fishing reports and surf threads.
