|
|
I have some old harnell rods I recently purchased... They have the white rubber grip above the reel seat with harnell logo along with the logo actually on rods and all the original varmac reel seats, and wooden handles.
Original wrapping is still there, all yellow and red
Only bad thing is most guides are gone and model numbers are pretty wore off...
Rod lengths are 8' - 7' - 6'9- and 6'.
Anybody have a book or knowledge on how to tell what model they are? |

I don't think there is a book on built rods. There are old blank catalogs. I sold mine on E-bay. Without the decals it will be a best guess. The size reel seat , gimbal , guides (if original) and tip size will help with identification. _________________ Life is Good |

I would say two things here. One is those look like Harnells to me, and I've got a few, and two, if you want those rods looking at least as good or possibly even better than they did when they came from the factory, let Steve Honc, the man who posted just above, have them to clean, rewrap, and rejuvinate them for you. You will have made a great investment in some great vintage rods, and you will have had the pleasure of working with one of the most knowledgeable, capable, trustworthy, and honest Harnell experts out there.
If you want to learn more about Harnells, or any other rod I suspect, and talk to the person who in every Harnell discussion on boards here and Florida, and I guess across the board, is looked to for his knowledge and expertise, talk to Steve. This man knows his stuff.
How do I know, he has wrapped rods for me, and I have bought rods from him, the last three being two Harnell 542s and a 552, all looking like they just came off the showroom floor. And, I have read his Harnell posts on several forums as others asked questions and explored his knowledge.
Steve didn't know I was going to say this or do this, but I couldn't resist. He is a class act in the Harnell Rod world in my opinion. Below are two photos of his shop he posted previously on another board; look at this, clean and everything in its place. Heck I could eat off the floor!! You can't get better than this; the entire picture shows you are dealing with a true craftsman, a man who knows his business and is proud of it:

So we unscrewed the handles and measured the rods to exact... We Have a 4'9, 5'6, 5'6 and 6'6. The 5'6 is a model# 505... The other 5'6 is model # 522 and the 6'6 one is model# 525.... The only one we cant figure out is the 4'9 one because there is no rod under 5'3 in the catalog.
Two are meant for trolling and one is meant for a boat rod.
There is a ferrule covering the butt of the rod so we cant get the butt diameter to see if it could have been one of the rods in the catalog...
Thank you for your help though steve! That website definitely was extremely helpful. |
