Just wondering the state of the run this time of year? Have never fished for them down at Port A much so I was wondering how much later they run there. On the Upper coast, it is pretty much over except for stragglers.
Not wanting your secret spots but if you have any general suggestions for a shorebound fisherman, it would be greatly appreciated.
TIA! _________________ Cudakilla.com

The Packery Channel is a good spot but it's tapering off compared to last month. I think the Red Tide had something to do with the finger mullet moving through there or they just knew I was fishing cuz they were no where to be found every time I went. The other folks that were fishing were racking them up with the mullet they bought at the bait store. It's the only lead I can give you for fishing from the shore. _________________ I wasn't born in the Bluff but I got here as fast as I could! |

Packery as of recent had bad redtide in it and a few days ago had a lot of dead fish, especially closer to the ICW. I would probably avoid that area in general.
Now to the core of your question... some of my best Flounder days have been in Decemeber, especially my biggest. But they do thin out day by day. Rumors were Port A had a good run recently... I would possibly try there. I have also caught Flounder throughout the entire winter on rod and reel... so not all Flounder make the trip out to the Gulf. _________________ -Oz |

Yeah what he said!
I was thinking, all them 24" long 2 1/2" thick flatties that I saw being caught on the way out to the gulf have to be somewhere in the lagoon when not running but where? That is my question! Lol _________________ I wasn't born in the Bluff but I got here as fast as I could! |

I believe the state record was caught in the bay, in the winter. You're dead on about not all of them leaving for the Gulf. _________________ "Ya'll must eat a lot of fish" |

Thanks a bunch for the tips. The best flounder I have caught to date was at Christmas time in Bayou Vista near Galveston. And the run usually runs out early for that area. _________________ Cudakilla.com

All I can say is that we are getting them in the Laguna. Sorrry guys.... 2011 has been an awesome year for flounder.I'm leaving now to give it a try again. I love Blacken Flounder. <><
Just a little something----Just about ever week this year I heard of stories where on just about ever trip in my fishermen network at least one flounder was caught on rod and reel. I can honestly say that I caught over hundred flounder on rod reel/lure in the Laguna Madre this year. Im glad that Texas Parks and Wildlife banned gigging during the run and reduced bag limit. This may stir it up but Texas Parks and Wildlife now needs to reduce the daily bag on Speckled Trout with one Trophy Tag over 25". This is my opinion. |

I've seen more flounder caught this year than the last 6 years since I've been in Port A, so I think the regulation change is working for now.
Still not gotten off my butt to go try to catch them though _________________ I'd rather be fishing |

New regulations can only help Flounder whether I, or we, like it or not if people are obeying the law.
While no offense to them, I also believe reducing commercial from 60 to 30 has benefited as well. I do not know price of flounder, but I hope price has gone up for the guys to compensate for the reduction. They know how to find the fish almost year around.
Unfortunately, I have witnessed several getting limit and running them home only to return and go again, but this will always be true no matter the species.
"Old Timers" have many times over told me Flounder make a 5 year cycle as far as numbers are concerned. If this is true, and from keeping estimated records, we are in year five or one, depending on perspective, of being the best of the five year cycle. Along with ratred55, this has been a good year for the Flounder. If still true, this "wisdom" dictates they will start wanning in coming years, but just perhaps new regulations will throw it a curve ball. |

I think the new regulations have helped quite a bit. This year despite the new limits, I have done better than I have ever done with flounder with more and better quality fish. Or maybe I'm just getting better at it! LOL!
That being said I hope they relax the possession limit a bit back to the standard of 2 days bag limit. Kinda pointless for me to drive from Austin to anywhere on the coast, fish 2 days and be able to bring home only 5 fish. In fact don't even bother to fish for them in November when the daily bag and possession is only 2. I know I am not the only one that feels that way and it's gotta really hurt the local economies that rely on the traveling fisherman. Like the previous poster stated, the regs IMHO don't really affect the sly locals that much.
I remember many years back when I used to fish Galveston exclusively for flounder during the run and have on a number of occasions, seen such large numbers of flounder when wade fishing that they were busting up on the surface like large schools of trout. This was when there were no limits imposed. The last 10 years have indeed seen the run down of their numbers. Hopefully they'll make the same comeback that we've seen with redfish and we'll see some relaxation of the limits for recreational fishermen. _________________ Cudakilla.com
