I know lots of folks have told me I'm nuts for paying for antivirus software so I was wondering what are the best free ones. My Norton is expired and was wondering what you "free" guys think. Thanks!

Great Grampa Alfonso always used to say "Anyting you can get fer free is worth savin up fer" Solid antihacking, anti invasive, antispam, anti everything is worth the small amount of money it costs per year.

I don't think there is a definitive winner. Kind of like Ford vs Chevrolet. Folks will usually recommend whatever it is they have, but in the end there are tradeoffs. Just make sure you couple the virus/trojan protection with something to handle all the spyware nonsense as well, and keep it all updated. Oh and don't install any of the bundled bs that comes with a lot of these programs, unless you really want it - obnoxious web browser toolbars and such.

AVG, Avast, Avira, Malwarebytes, and Superantispyware are all respectable, and generally free. I am partial to Avast, but again, Ford vs. Chevy.

Its best to use the free ones then if you want to upgrade you can. I had a computer shop put in my anti virus and they charge me a hundred and some dollars. Got home and looked at it and it was a free download that they charged me big bucks for. Evil or Very Mad

If you need pc consultation I charge by fishing hours. Lol don't go to firestone they will tell you that you need a new pc and purchase a lifetime warranty.

AVG is too not bad, but it has gotten so bloated that it uses a lot of resources and will slow your computer down. I used it for about 5 years and switched away from it a couple of years ago. I can really tell a difference now in the speed of my system.

Guys the best place to go for freeware is:

http://www.techsupportalert.com/

This website reviews all the freeware available and rates it in over 100 categories, gives you the good and bad with each program and the gives you links where you can download it. They have a "best" rated free program in each category.

They have "best freeware lists" and an "editors choice" list of the best freeware in multiple categories.

Right now 'AVAST" is rated as the best freeware antivirus available, and "COMODO INTERNET SECURITY" is rated as the best firewall. There are recommendations for registry cleaners, backup software, etc. - just about anything you can think of.

I have been getting all of my software from this site for at least 5 years.

Try it - It will become a "go to" website.

I use Avast on this new computer I built 3 months ago, and it has been flawless.

I used Malware bytes on my old machine, and it was decent.

Thanks guys. I also have MalwareBytes. Looks like Avast will be getting a visit from me this afternoon. I appreciate all the responses.
