Well, I'm not lucky enough to pick my weather windows so I just go with the flow. Watched the weather all week and tossed around the idea of one last trip for the year. Well, Friday afternoon I decided that Saturday after work I would grind it out. I'm getting pretty good at fishing in bs conditions anyway so why not. With the whole TX Coast at my disposal, where to go, where to go. I love PINS but after Oz's report and the front office saying Red Tide was still around, I decided against running to the cut with the North winds blowing it that way. One quick call to my buddy Casey, and it was set. We would meet and invade the small fishing community of Sargent TX and own any fish that ran the Mitchel's Cut gauntlet. I had pre-decided that if I did fish, kayaks and Shark racks would be left behind so this was going to be a strictly shore fishing excursion to save me some gas money. With the propane heater packed, I headed out in a decent downpour from SA about 3:30 Sat afternoon wondering what I had just gotten myself into but motivated to finish the year strong. Got there and setup around 7:30pm, with Casey and his girlfriend arriving around 9pm. Mullet was tough to find but I did manage 3 finger mullet and we had a lb of fresh dead Shrimp. It was cold... and it was drizzling... and it was windy... Fishing was SLOWWWWW, so I busted out the good Whiskey and Casey had the Rum. Casey struck first at 2:15am with a nice Black Drum. 41.5".

Bedtime was a little after 4am for some much needed sleep. At some point I was having a dream that had a slow steady click to it. Then I opened my eyes and was staring at the roof of the tentcot, still hearing the click but in a daze trying to figure out what was happening. Then I finally snapped, oh yeah, we were fishing. Hauled out of the tentcot and grabbed the rod to slow down the now almost empty spool. Got the fish turned and brought it in. I struck second with a nice 9am 34" Red.

Action was a little slow but steady the rest of the day.

Casey w a 17" Sheepshead

Me w 22.5" B Drum

Me w 23.5" B Drum

Then about 5:45pm Sunday evening, it happened. The Jigmaster took off. I had it sitting farther in the channel than the rest of the baits with a Whiting head on it. After a decent tug of war, I landed a 41" Red.

You know it was a hot, dry summer when their spot melts

Casey and Brooke had to leave shortly after, but I'm off on Mondays so I decided I would stay and grind it out til morning.

35" B Drum 9:40pm Sunday

34" B Drum 10:40 pm Sunday

24" B Drum 03:30am Monday

BRRRRRRRR

Packed it up around 8:30am since I ran out of bait during the night and drove around doing a little exploring along the intercoastal, then headed for home. It wasn't the year I had planned but it was still a great year. Breaking my finger back in April and the surgery, bone grafting and metal screws that went along with repairing it really put a dent in my fishing during the summer. I'm hoping to right that wrong next summer but I'm looking at 2 more surgeries on the finger next year. I hadn't fished since Sharkathon and was dying to get in one more trip. I'm glad we toughed it out and the fishing was better than I could have hoped. I felt good after my first fish because I beat the Skunk on my final trip, the rest were just a bonus. Met some new folks this year and built stronger friendships with others, which is what it's all about. Thanks again to all involved in keeping Extreme and CorpusFishing online and allowing me to post my hunting and fishing adventures. Hope to see you all out there again in 2012.

Later
Sean

Thanks for the report! Mitchell's Cut is a great spot for drum and reds. We went there quite often from the Matagorda side with the late Flakman.
