Here we go. I had a friend-of-a-friend attend the Dickinson meeting last night (which was poorly attended, like 7 people). but did get some good info.

Guess the SSA proposal was watered down from what "they" wanted. The original proposal, which wasn't even going to be scoped and JUST IMPLEMENTED wasn't for a SSA, but for a LIFA (low-impact fishing area)!!

IN YOUR BACKYARD! no more two minute HH, Zia and IMS. paddle craft only. not with the SSA, but with the LIFA, which will be proposed sooner than you know it, especially if the SSA passes and is implemented.

TPWD is also aware that the Corpus meetings will be very contentious. please be civil with your comments, and have a clear recommendation for them to take back to the Commission.

Here is a link to what TP&W is trying to sell to the public on their website.

I sure hope they don't try an end-around.

Thanks for the link Capt Mike. and I agree with you about the end-around.

blows my mind that TPWD doesn't focus on areas like Christmas Bay, West Galveston, South Bay, and other areas that we all KNOW are having issues with seagrass scarring. we're here in the middle of the best seagrasses on the entire Texas coast; why add extra enforcement and sampling on an area that isn't having a significant problem?

waste of time and taxpayer $$'s.

Grand total of 5 attendees at the meeting including me and my wife. Only item read into the minutes was a "seemingly innocuous" letter read into the minutes by Will Myers of Texas Wade, Paddle, and Pole. There was another lady talking directly about a LIFA, but I think she was representing a group she was President of which was concerned about a LIFA and were against one being instituted.

The presentation clearly had nothing to say about a LIFA. The "T,P&W Presentation" took about 15 minutes and within 30 minutes the meeting was ended, except for Will Myers hanging around for some period after I had to take the wife to dinner.

My suggestion since it was apparent that no one in the San Antonio area seemed to even know about the meeting, is that unless you all flood the hall next week in Corpus and again the following week, that Texas Wade, Paddle and Pole will have the TP&W peoples ear all to themselves. For example, Will Myers came all the way from Austin to attend this meeting in San Antonio.

If one of you INFLUENTIAL GUYS wants the handouts from this meeting before the meetings in Corpus, PM me address and I'll mail them to you tomorrow. I can send them second day if necessary.

I think we will have a few more people at the meetings down here. The fact that TPWD has scheduled two meetings in CC indicates that they are anticipating bigger turn outs. I encourage anyone who has an opinion (whether it agrees with mine or not) to turn out and make your opinion known. It's no secret that I feel WPP is using the State Scientific Area proposal to get a foot in the door. TPWD is planning on a possible scoping of a LIFA in January and the Backyard looks like it will make the short list. If it is already considered a SSA, then the LIFA will be much easier to make reality.
It's also no secret where I stand on the SSA proposal. There is no scientific data to back an SSA in the Backyard area. There is no shortage of sea grass nor any threat to that sea grass. There are parts along the Texas coast that have historically been major areas of seagrass that are now devoid of any vegetation. Porky mentioned several in his above post. Why not focus our resources on areas that have been damaged by boat traffic rather than worrying about the strongest seagrass stronghold in the state? I would also like to know what kind of funding TPWD will set aside for scientific research if the SSA if approved for the Backyard. Hope to see everyone at the meeting.

I really must agree with Aaron on every point he has posted. You guys that use the ULM really need to show up at the local scoping meetings and voice you opinions.

BTW......the TP&W and the SIG's that are involve might be looking at the wrong area for a SSA. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change we looking at a sea level rise of as much as 50cm (20")
Warmer water and the melting polar cap being the cause.
Soooooooooo......maybe this scoping meeting needs to include IMS's
House, front an backyard. Razz Very Happy

Aaron I don't know for sure but I'll be the funding for the project will come from the same sources that the Redfish Bay SSA funding came from
and I'm sure there will be the SIG's involved.

Let's keep the folk's emails out of this. if I sent something to any of you on a personal basis I would not appreciate it showing up on a post whether it is about LIFAs or anything else.

Thanks.

There's the science. Where's this SSA issue coming from?
