Like to know what you all think is the best way to hold a catch for release. I've heard that grabbing them by the bottom jaw and lifting them up is not good for the fish and neither is grabbing them in the gill sockets. Somebody told me to grab them by bottom flap of the mouth and then host them up by the tail. What say you all?

I use a Boga. Prior to release you can swish the fish in a figure 8 motion to revive them.

Is that something that can be taken wade fishing and hold up to salt water immersion?

The Boga Grip is a great tool, but it's a little pricey. It's well made and easily cleaned. You can take it wade-fishing, but make sure you have a float on it. I've never had a fish get loose from the boga.

Lefty Ray, when you say move it in a figure 8 is that with the boga still attached to the fish?

Try a tool called the fish grip holder it is 13 dollars on the Cabelas website. I have both the boga grip and the fish grip holder and they both work fine and the fish grip holder also floats.

I bought one of those at Roy's and don't have to worry about rust and corrosion.

Boga is a great tool but...............don't use it on snook as studies have shown high mortality in released snook due to the stress put on their unique jaw structure. Also, I have had a few larger trout break their lower jaws when trying to get loose from the boga. I know of at least two others who have had this happen. Still, a couple of bad experiences coupled with the countless hundreds of other fish I've held with no problem makes it a product I would definately recommend.

use a fish gripper of some kind and hold the fish horizontal supporting his actual weight with your other hand under his belly. The gripper makes it easier to handle the fish and remove a hook. The real lifting especially a big fish should be with your other hand around his midsection.

Top Dog, Yeah, I was more concerned with injury to the fish prior to release . I"ve heard that grabbing a fish by the bottom jaw and hoisting it up can dislocate the jaw. So, even when you revive the fish it will strave to death anyways.

And sticking your fingers into its gill slits is probably going to cause gill damage.

How much weight can the plastic one hold?

yes, still attached to the fish. The head swivels so no torgue is placed on your hand.

With a little practice you can put the Boga on it as you bring the fish to you without having to touch the fish.

Once the Boga is on it, remove the hook. For a quick photo, but one hand under its belly and pick the fish up in a horizontal manner, then lower back into the water.

The figure 8 motion is better than the back and forth motion as the back and forth motion only works in the fishs favor when going foward

There is cheeper knock offs of Boga grips, however they don't have a scale like the real boga grip does.

I love using my boga, especially when your landing smaller fish that obviously gets released I don't even touch the fish. Just lip grip it, take the hook out and send the fish on its way!
