| There is a full time resident manatee in Port Mansfield. Its been there for a few years and the cold weather doesn't seem to bother him. I guess I'm a little confused as to why this animal needed to be rescued. What will ultimately happen to it? |

Port Mansfield may be right on the northern border for the Mexican species. I know they see a lot of them in the summer in the lower laguna. Weather wise, Brownsville stays a warmer than us throughout the winter.
This particular animals is clearly under wieght. Also, one sign that shows us the cold is effecting it is that the skin is sloughing off and there are a lot of light color spots. This has been documented before and the cause is being too cold. Our bay water temps (in surf temps) dip into the 50sF in the winter time. Not for long periods, be still gets down there. These animals comfort zone is between 75F and 86F. They are not like dolphin and whales that have a blubber layer to help insulate them against the cold.
This animal is going to be transported to Florida in the near future to be in a more favorable environment for rehab. They will have to do DNA testing to see what species it is so when it is time to be released, they will know if it needs to be released in Florida or Mexico. _________________ FISH ON!!,

I guess I never thought of the Mansfield manatee being a mexican variety. Thanks for the info. _________________ A flute without holes, is not a flute. A donut without a hole, is a Danish. |

| I am the Safety gal for Zachry construction and I was here at Citgo during the rescue. Zachry was the company that actually operated the crane and assisted in the manatee rescue. I was very proud to assist my guys with setting up all of the equipment and rigging needed. We were all very happy at the outcome of this rescue since we spent all day down there keeping a close eye on him. He kept the whole refinery entertained during the day! Again, thanks for everything. |

I was the guy who went out with the kayak and dragged the net around the manatee so they could catch him. _________________ FISH ON!!,
