I just moved to Corpus. I haven't really fished much in several years and the last time was freshwater in creeks and tanks. I would like to get into some relaxed pier fishing in the area and progress from there. Please help with the following:

1) Average rod and reel for pier fishing
2) Type of bait or lures
3) Type of line
4) Locations

Thanks for any assistance.

1. Bay rods up to big game tackle depending on what you're after
2. Live bait is always good in the surf. Topwaters and spoons are good lures.
3. Use a line appropriate to the size of your rod/reel
4. Bob Hall Pier, Port A Jetty, Packery Jetty, Horace Caldwell Pier, Indian Point Pier, Clems, Red Dot, etc.

I fish Bob Hall Pier just about every weekend and is a good fishing spot most of the time. Relaxed pier fishing; I have my doubts. You're either baiting hooks, neting fish, or fighting the weed. Don't get me wrong some days are great and I have been known to nap from time to time. For your rod get one with a little backbone to it, the reds can be very aggressive at the pier. 12 to 15# test should work fine, with a 20 to 30# leader tied on. Live shrimp will get you off to a good start, they will catch game fish and bait fish. You will want to invest in a drop net.If you decide to fish Bob Hall look me up , I fly a King Mackeral flag on my anchor rod out on the tee. Good luck and tight lines.
