Went offshore this morning 35 miles at the Packery channel where I launch a guy was coming in as we were going out around 0640 "late start" and he told us it was 6 footers and he had to turn around he was in a flats boat...... I just said ok we will find out for ourselves knowing it was not rough. It was choppy and close together for 2-3 footers.

Saw a bunch of birds trolled some and caught a nice kingfish. Went to a rig caught some red snapper. Dove and shot a cobia and some mangrove snapper. I saw amber jack everywhere, if it were season I could shoot my limit of fatties in no time.
Went to a different rig and dove shot some mangrove snapper and sharks quickly appeared, left that rig.
Went to another rig and dove shot a 12lb or so big big big big Mangrove snapper! It is the biggest I have seen or shot. I initially thought it was a Grouper. Sharks showed up again but we kept diving. Fished the same spot then caught one 4.5-5 foot shark it was brown with no black tips. I dont know what kind it was. Trolled and caught a cuda then ran home. We could have killed more mangrove snapper but I am starting to feel guilty with all the killing!!!!!! HA HA.

Overall killed our limit of red snapper, about 10 mangrove snapper, a kingfish, and a cobia. Pics to follow.

Cool Mess of fish.... Massive Mangrove!

I wouldn't promote shooting a Cobia, it is against the law according to TP&W standards and they will issue you a ticket and/or confiscate your gear.

As far as I know and what I have read it is legal in federal waters to shoot cobia which is where I am fishing. The snapper was about 40feet down in 220 foot of water.

If you find me something that says it is illegal in Federal waters and not only will I stop posting up about it but I will stop doing it! My boat and my Naval career are not worth little fish that I am just going to give away anyhow! I just searched and searched and it boiled down to being a gray area about bringing them back into Texas waters not about shooting them.

The game wardens are reasonable people and if not the judge would be when i should my GPS tracks. As long as you are respectful they will just do there job and leave ya alone! That is my experience with them on a bi monthly basis. Some of the time they dont even know the fish I have in my boat. They ask me what species they are!! HA HA

Oz is correct about shooting cobia. It is legal to do so in federal waters but you can't land them in Texas:

"The limits and restrictions in this guide apply to aquatic life caught in the public waters of Texas out to nine (9) nautical miles in the Gulf of Mexico, and also apply to aquatic life caught between 9 and 200 nautical miles in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and landed in this state."

AJ season is not open right now...

apparently, rig donkeys have become as rare and endangered as red snapper...so they need their own special season too.

basically, the season is closed during the best time of the year to fish for them.... ironic.

in federal waters, you can shoot all those. providing the gods in control bless the simple people of the united states with an open season for that particular species.

SWEET!

I'm hungry for some Red Snappers! It's been a long time since I've caught or eaten them. I haven't seen any on the restaurants' menus that I've been to.

Great Catch!
