Call Scott Flory at Bizzy Air. I don't have the number but he's a good friend and fishing buddy of myself, Jay, Jeff, etc. Jay will have the number or he's in the book. Does a lot of work on the island, bluff etc.

Got a great guy named Gary Williams. He used to teach AC at Del Mar.

He is now head of maintenance at the airport and does this on the side. |

Joe with Vollmer A/C sold me an Amana 14 SEER back in 2007. 10 Year parts and labor. He is coming by today (for the first time since the install) to look at the outside unit. We will see how good the warranty is on this puppy. You want me to send him your way this afternoon for a free quote? LMK. _________________

make sure your cheap quotes are not not for a builder grade unit. It got burned like that once(Bob Reneau @ TEMPCO 881-8364) will not install a builder grade unit because they are very cheaply made. Give him a call and good luck _________________ Wishin I was fishin!

Well after talking to 50 a/c guys and a couple I work with that are licenced and do heavy duty a/c out here at the mill. I have learned that top of the line are, american standard, trane, lennox, followed by what ever the installers happen to carry. Like rheem , rudd, carrier, tempstar , goodman. The ones that hold up best in our salt air are , Trane, and American Standard for about $400 more. There are American standards on the Island that have been running in excess of 22 years. I will kick the thought of the rheem out for the American Standard too many say its the best. I guess we will see. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

| I got a Trane 6 years ago and it is doing well. My sister-in-law used to work for them and American Standard is also a Trane brand or vice versa sort of like American Standard a Honda and Trane is an Acura. |

I heard the same thing about Trane/AmStd, but my experience was different. I guess there are only 3 companies that make the majority of brands.
I replaced a Trane/AmStd unit last year after it finally died (11 years old and had lots of issues during that time). The outside unit was beyond fixing, although the air handler inside was still ok. I got quotes of about $1700-2K for a new outside unit.
After crunching the numbers, though, I ended up getting a full new system -- Lennox Elite 3.5 ton heat pump. It was good enough (SEER 16 combined rating) to qualify for the Fed Tax Credit.
Total cost was about $4950 installed (this was in Austin). The gov't gave me a tax credit of $1500 back (33% of price up to $4500 max). I also got a local Electric Co-op credit of $350. Then I sold my air handler for $500 on Craigslist.
Total net price was about $2600 after all that, so it was pointless to spend $2K on a new outside unit if it only bought me a few years until the inside unit went. Also, it appears to be saving me at least $25-50 a month in electric costs. And, when I sell the house in Austin (in a year or so) to become a full time beach bum, it should be worth a few $K more because of the brand new unit with 10yr warranty and better efficiency.
Compared to the old Trane, the new one is dead silent and cools much better.
So you might want to see if the tax credit still applies (has to be on a primary residence though) and what the net cost will be on a new unit. _________________ -Dave

My electric bill runs about 125.00 a month with the Goodman 14seer. It will be a good test to see how the heat pump holds up here in the humidity. No need to swap my inside unit as i have taken very good care of it, its good for another 10. Believe me if they said swap it it would be gone. I take good care of my renters. see you at the par-tee. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |
