Hey y'all,

I got my rod kit yesterday and have the handle, seat and fore grip installed. Still waiting for a response from Mudhole on the proper guide spacing for this particular blank and fishing style. Can't WAIT to give it a go next month on the offshore trip!!!!

Any of you rod builders down there who might be able to help me out, please feel free!!!

WHICH ROD ARE YOU BUILDING AND WHAT TYPE OF REEL

Bottom one on the spinning list. Reel is a Quantum Boca PT60 spooled w/65 lb Spider Wire Stealth. A little on the heavy side for this blank, but yes................................. I do know how to use a drag and I know how to fight a fish! I'm using 65 instead of 50 lb braid just for the strength and abrasion buffer. I bought this reel because it's supposed to have one of the smoothest, strongest, most heat resistant drags on the market.

The kit has 5 guides plus tip top and the reel is centered (foot) 64" from the rod tip. I FINALLY found one chart showing the proper spacing for said dimensions but am still quite open to further thoughts and suggestions, thanks!

You may not have enough handle behind the reel. Go to shimano butter fly jigs on you tube and look at those rods they are using and the method of jigging.

Thanks Rabbit, but the kit is designed for stand up jigging. I would surely hope that the folks at Mudhole could figure out the proper handle lengths!

It feels good under my arm and using a butterfly jigging motion. I'd rather have my left arm (reel handle) closer in than further away, it keeps my chest more open and should be less fatiguing.

Here's a pic with the guides just taped into place. Believe me when I tell you that this outfit is stronger than the picture tells!!!!

There are numerous different tables and charts that can be used for guide spacing. I actually created a spreadsheet based on the method in Dale Clemens book on Custom Rod Building....I can send that to you if you like (PM me your e-mail address).

THE REST OF THE TIPS PUT ON WHERE CHART SAYS WITH TAPE OR ZIP TIES THEN PUT ON REEL RUN LINE THUR GUIDES PUT PRESSURE ON LINE TO BEND ROD LOOK AT THE LINE MOVE GUIDES TO GET THE BEST ANGLE ON LINE WITH OUT VERY SHARP ANGLES THE BETTER THE LINE MAKE A CURVE THE BETTER THE ROD WILL BE

Thanks. I had already seen that copy but was looking for more info. I guess I just need to stop looking and get after it!

Logic tells me that even using this system, all rod blanks don't bend the same way, and the guides should be placed so as to follow the bending characteristics of the blank. I have also seen the static system and that seems to be more logical (if time consuming) way to do this.

As in most things, there seems to be no free lunch!!!

Here's a good read on the subject of static guide placement, and one writer usies common sense and logic to blow the "two pieces of line" technique out of the water........................................................... it didn't make sense to me either!!!!! The line running through the guides and THEN from the tip is what loads the blank, NOT just a weight hanging from the tip but not stress on the other guides!!!!
