not to stir the pot or ruffle anyone's undies but i have a real, legit question.
whats your all's input on Yakers and even Boaters taking a mandatory drivers ed course ? and being issued a license ? just like vehicles ? grant you,the majority of the boaters,Yakers have common sense, respect and all for each other...but there's always the golden few who have no clue.and those few give the others bad names..etc....ive seen it,you've seen it.its going to happen more and more..
just a thought.and maybe some honest input.yes ,im a wader and a yaker.
Yaks and Boats remind me of the Bicycle's and Cars....the Cars going to win.. and the Boats going to win.nope,i dont drop anchor in the middle of a channel i know boats need to go thru to pass.kinda like chasing a quarter in the middle of SPID.so,what cha think ? |

A license can't fix stupid........................ or drunk!!!! A very high % of boaters equate a good time on the water wish copious amounts of their favorite adult beverage(s), so even if they normally do have a little sense and/or know the boating laws half well, that all goes out the window............................ or over the Gunwale!!!! _________________ Dave

| You're right, Dave, a license won't fix stupid or drunks but a mandatory course with a minimum passing grade on an exam means they have at least heard the rules and passed an exam on them once. I was knocked out of my boat several years ago by a guy passing me (same direction as me) on the right, a situation that never gave him the right of way. I assure you he has never in his life heard the terms "stand on" and "give way". He was sober and pissed that I got in his way. |

I fully agree there should be some minimum set of standards to own a boat because all it takes right now is a credit rating! I am really surprised given the traffic these days that more people don't get hurt or killed. _________________ Later,

I never said that I thought watercraft licensing to be a bad idea, only stating what should be obvious: Everyone who drives a vehicle on the road MUST legally do whatever it takes to get said license, including any and all tests. Still, driving on the road with other people behind the wheels of other vehicles is the MOST dangerous thing that many of us will ever do! Everywhere we go we see the most lame brain crap from drivers............................. wait for it............................................ who all have licenses!!!!
All one need to do is look up some simple statistics. We are all WAY more likely to be hurt or killed on the road than by anyone with ANY KIND of weapon, or all weapons combined!!
I rest my case on that aspect of this. The other side would be money. AS LONG AS all boat licensing fees went to build and/or maintain boat ramps, navigation/hazard warning signs and possibly to more wardens, I say bring it on! But just like social security, politicians tend to grab any and all revenue sources the a Mockingbird on a Junebug and throw them all in the "my pet project" or "my special interest" fund, or whatever. THAT my friend, I want no part of in your state, my state or the whole freaking country!!!! _________________ Dave

Licensing everyone on the water will give more credibility and more solid grounds for issuing citations for violating rules of the road or water. What we'll need is a better policing effort of the water ways. _________________

Remember the old saying: "ignorance of the law is no excuse"?
The boating/right of way rules already exist, license or not.
Y'all, I ride a bicycle and not just short mileage. I hear this same type stuff from some riders, not about licensing of bikes mind you, but that cars and trucks don't see/respect the bikers..................... kind of like you yakkers and the power boaters. I make the point continually to those saying this, don't take it personally: people in cars and tracks pull out in front of other cars, tracks, 18 wheelers and trains all day long, and they ALL have to be licensed!!!!!
There is no panacea or magic bullet for safety anywhere. If you rely on other people to look out for YOUR personal safety or those with you, you're asking for real trouble and a short life!!!! _________________ Dave

| Hmmm. Wonder what the highway stats would look like if there was no licensure exam to pass. I could care less about a license - just passing the Texas Boater Safety Course would be a good deal for all. |

You won't get any argument from me there pal, I agree with you mostly. Just playing devils advocate: people are people and all of the rules and regulations in the world won't stop many of them from being drunk and stupid. _________________ Dave

Going to Robul's post that got you thinking. Courtesy. Some fisherman, either by boat, kayak, wade, or bank don't always have the same consideration.
On the flip side of things when people complain about not seeing kayakers. Good eyes from 400 yards away. _________________ Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience. |

And just for kicks how about a mandatory drug test upon completetion of the boating exam. I bet everybody would like that. And a drug screen for everyone getting a welfare check. Might as well throw that in just for the hll of it. _________________ I LIKE MINE FRIED. |

I have a mixed opinion here. On one hand I think it's a great idea to license the operator, "captain of the vessel", so to speak. It would at least attempt to set a standard of operation.
On the other hand, we all know it won't be free so what to do with the revenue. As long as it's not a ridiculous fee and won't hurt people to get it then I am not against it if it will show some decrease in stupidity on the water. I am not there anymore but in a few years I will be back for good and would be ok with it if it works properly. I am sure some will have comment on this post but this is my opinion and I probably won't have time to comment further on it....I am hammered in Guam _________________ still chasing my 30" trout |
