I was right there up to recommendation "n." What is the distinction between "required" and "mandatory"? I'm all for boater education being required, by the way.

This LTTE was in todays Caller Times 2/20/2011

Capt. Mark Lyons

Closer watch warranted

Reading David Sikes’ column on the Challenges to Sharing and Conserving Our Bays Workshop, I thought it was well prepared and hit the nail on the head (“Overall, workshop outcome positive,” Feb. 17). I, too, was part of the workshop representing the Coastal Bend Guides Association. I thought parts of the workshop were handled a little oddly, to put it politely. Trust going into the workshop was already thin because of the Texas Wade, Paddle and Pole (TWPP) organization’s agenda to create low-impact fishing areas. My trust in the workshop was further reduced when certain topics we voted to remove or that the workshop group never recommended were later inserted into the final draft.

This makes me wonder if, in fact, there were some things organizers already had etched in the proverbial stone. As for myself and the guides association, this type of behavior will make us keep a closer watch on TWPP and Larry McKinney, who moderated the workshop and wrote the final report.

The TPWD leadership is like the CCA leadership. You can't trust them!!

Larry McKinney no longer works for TPWD. He's the executive director of the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
