My son is is turning 5 and loves to go fishing with me, and I love to take him. I'm just not sure where is a good place to take him around here. I did some exploratory driving last week (along with getting skunked!) and saw some interesting areas.

Is Packery channel park good for him? Seems like a fairly safe spot where I don't have to worry about him falling in. (He can get aggressive on the cast and the piers kinda scare me with him). Are there smaller fish in there that I can set him up to catch under a float?

Thanks for all your help.

packery should work..rig him up with a sabiki rig with tiny pieces of shrimp under his float and let him slay the pin perch. There are lots of spots you can go but just depends what part of town. Shoot me a pm if you want to know anything else.

Great, Thanks. I'm really looking froward to taking him out. He doesn't care what he catches, just loves to see the float disappear and then haul it in. It's so much fun.

The "T" and "L" heads are a good safe place to catch some nice bobber pull-unders.

Are the "T" and "L" Heads the ones downtown off of Shoreline? Sorry, but I'm not that familiar with the local terminology yet.

Beach Beach Beach!! The whiting bite is on right now and there is nothing safer or more fun. Just have him cast past the first set of breakers in the wade gut and he will catch as many whiting as you can take off the hook.

I do it all the time with my 2, 4, and 6 year old boys.

^^^ agreed, my 6, 6, & 7 year old all love going fishing out there and when they tire of fishing (all but the 7 y/o do pretty quickly) then they just play in the sand and my fishing day doesnt have to be over.

Gotta go with the T and L head on this one. Or, over by the art museum. When I was a kid growing up in corpus, I put a hurtin' on many a perch and still remember it to this day. Pull up to the water, put some shrimp pieces on a small hook, and let him get after it until he is worn out.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I'm really excited to take him out. I just need a little translation please. I'm not sure what the above quote means. I'm still learning the local lingo.

Thanks again for all your help. Hoping to get him out real soon, he can't wait to go.

when an incoming wave hits structure or sandbar it rises as it goes over the edge, thus "breaking". usually up to three in most areas of the surf shoreline
the first gut is between the first noticable breaker and the second a little farther from shore.

There's a good thread stickied towards the top which may help.

http://www.corpusfishing.com/messageboard/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15812

I'd add Charlie's Pasture to that list, though it's usually hit-or-miss...it's very kid-friendly. From the light at the Ferry landing in Port A, there's a road behind the Stripes store (Port Street). Follow that road down, and you'll find a T-head pier. You can drive down quite a ways, find a spot and set up.

They're doing a lot of work to the "nature preserve" part of it; you'll see a turnoff on the left as you head down with some trails and stuff. Always good if the kids get bored.
