Went into Academy recently and they said they no longer carry Fish Bytes(Bites?) in the strips or squares.
Where do you folks buy them if not at Academy?
Thanks,

| wally world, breakaway, cosway, some HEBs, pretty much EVERYWHERE but Academy. Not sure what Academy's problem is with fish bites. They have a quarter of an isle of crappie fishing bs, 15 different brands of camo steering wheel covers, pink deer blinds, but no fish bites. |

Off subject, but Fishbites related. I got a sack of the Fishbites 3" white paddletails in the promotion that they ran on this site a year or so ago. I had not had the chance to use them until a recent trip to Baytown in October. I fished them on 1/8 oz jigheads and the flounder were all over them! I used them all up (some to cutoffs on the oysters) and restocked plus Fishbites shrimp when we went through the Katy Bass Pro on the way out of town.
Definitely worth finding...strips or lures. |

Academy just keeps getting more lame with their fishing selection. Offshore/big game section is ramed right up on the waders, hooks always sold out, rods suck, wire is rusty, cast nets have plastic weights, 100's of useless lures, etc...Looks like they are more geared towards the double drop/sinker/shrimp fisherman.
HEB in the bluff has a better selection of stuff we actually use around here. Anything big game dont even waste your anywhere else beside ROYS. _________________ -Mando |

Actually, to me it looks like Academy is losing its roots and becoming more and more just another clothing store. Anyone looked at the markup on Nike's lately? |

r&r...you hit the nail on the head! They really need a purchasing agent for our store that actually lives on the coast. IMOHO. _________________

| And don't get me started on the quality of the employee!!! They are worse than Home Depot. Kids at HEB know more. At least at Bass Pro they know they don't have what you want. |

Take it easy on those kids! At least they have a job and are being productive citizens. There are a FEW guys there who know their stuff. Academy is now very much a "big box" store not unlike Sportsmart and Sports Authority in other parts of the country. If you want spot on service and knowledge go to the local shops like Roy's. If you know what you want and want to pay a little less on something's hit up Academy. Can't always have the best of both worlds. That's just the way it goes always has been and always will be that way. _________________ V/R,

I've got to agree, Academy's have gone downhill in the fishing department, at least the ones in austin. Rainbow trout season is here & I checked everyone I knew trying to find my go to lure, nada. They had all sorts of colors/sizes/brands that don't work, but none of the one color that almost always works or in the right sizes.
I also noticed no fishbites here either.
I've been told as a vender they are very hard to deal with, everything is geared towards them making a profit & screw the vendor making anything, plus bog them down with tons of paperwork that has to be completed with all the i's dotted & t's crossed or no $. |

I don't know. While it hass been a good 6 months or so since I have been in an Academy, I have had nothing but good experiences with the staff up here. One old timer told me he was dissapointed in the change in stock for saltwater rods and reels at the 1604 and Portranco store to nearly nothing. He helped me track down one of just a few Tsunami rods left in store here in SA, and called over to verify its location so I could pick it up.
The guys behind the counter helping out with guns and ammo have always been pretty well informed as well.
That being said, I am disappointed that they no longer will be stocking product according to their local market demands and needs. Real shame. Pretty sad when the local HEB and Wlamart are better stocked for slatwater fishing.
Thats why I am glad there are still Mom and Pop operations like Roys or Nick's Breakaway store that you can depend on for good service and quality tackle.
Good service and with gear aimed at our |

Amen to Roy's and Nick's. You can get what you need every time, and they are honest about what you actually need when you ask a question. I asked Nick which of his lines I needed for the general surf fishing. he guided me to one of his LEAST EXPENSIVE lines. It's also the most popular line he sells.
Academy at least has some employees - at Dicks I can never find anyone who is selling fishing gear. at Academy though they are usually congregating at the front of the store instead of walking the aisles. I guess I am upset there aren't more knowledgeable people in the stores. When I sold flooring for Home Depot, they made me put YODA in my name slot on my apron. When an employee couldn't answer a question they sent the person over to flooring to talk to the "OLD GUY WHO KNOWS EVERYTHING". One learns a lot when he builds his home from the ground up!! I quit Home Depot (like many others) when I finally got frustrated with getting the same 25 cents per hour per year raise as all the other numbskulls. |
